Eli Lilly (LLY) on Wednesday announced results from a real-world study involving more than 15,000 adults over the age of 55, noting that long-term use of its blockbuster weight loss therapy Zepbound was linked to lower healthcare costs over time.
The study, based on Komodo's Healthcare Map, which includes de-identified claims data from enrollees of U.S. healthcare plans, compared those who started Zepbound from November 2023 to September 2025 against those who didn’t receive any GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Excluding Zepbound costs, sustained use of the injectable was associated with up to 15% and 38% lower average monthly healthcare costs compared to untreated individuals at six months and 12 months, respectively, Lilly (LLY) said.
The company added that the findings highlight the savings from offering Zepbound as part of Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge program, which allows eligible Medicare enrollees to receive Zepbound and rival weight loss therapy Wegovy from Novo Nordisk (NVO) for only $50 per month.
With estimated savings associated with Zepbound use reaching up to $181 per patient at six months, Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge program's monthly treatment cost of $195 per patient would be nearly covered at that time point, according to Lilly (LLY).
“As coverage expands across Medicare, states, and employers, these data offer evidence on the cost implications of long-term obesity treatment and should help shape decisions,” said Ilya Yuffa, head of Lilly USA.
