Investors pulled back from U.S. equities last week, marking the first week of net selling since June as the market retreated from its recent highs, according to a recent note from Bank of America Securities.
The firm's equity client flow trends data revealed that clients were net sellers of U.S. equities for the first time in eight weeks. This shift was primarily driven by single-stock outflows totaling $5.0B, even as equity exchange-traded funds managed to extend their streak of inflows to a ninth consecutive week, adding $1.3B.
Selling was widespread across all major client groups. Institutional clients led the charge, with their rolling four-week average net flow turning negative for the first time in six weeks. Hedge funds also turned into net sellers after three weeks of buying, while retail clients recorded their fourth consecutive week of selling.
BofA noted signs of "capitulation" in crowded and expensive sectors, particularly industrials (XLI), which saw significant outflows for the fourth straight week. Additionally, clients sold stocks in six of the 11 major sectors, heavily led by the tech sector (XLK) following record inflows the previous week.
In the ETF space, clients favored Value (VTV) and Blend ETFs over Growth (VUG) funds and sold off tech ETFs alongside broader market funds.
