Shares of Best Buy (BBY) are defensive into Thursday’s open even as the company beat Wall Street’s expectations for its fiscal second quarter and raised guidance for the full year.
Led by strong sales in computing, smart glasses, collectibles, and home theater, Best Buy (BBY) saw a 3.6% increase in sales to nearly $10B, beating expectations by $190M. Comparable store sales doubled from a year ago to 4.1%, while the company’s profitability improved by 15% to $1.47 per share, 9 cents better than expected.
“We are very pleased to report we outperformed expectations in the second quarter with comparable sales growth of 4.1% and a higher-than-expected adjusted operating income rate,” said Corie Barry, Best Buy CEO. “We drove growth across almost all our major product categories as well as continued strong performance in our Best Buy Ads and Marketplace initiatives.”
In respect of the strong first-half results, Best Buy (BBY) raised its outlook for the year and now expects revenue to be between $42.3B and $42.8B from the prior outlook of $41.2B to $42.1B, with the $42.55B midpoint of the new range above the $42.07B consensus estimate.
Comparable sales are now seen between 1.9% and 3% from earlier guidance of down 1% to up 1%, while adjusted EPS is seen between $6.70 and $6.90 per share, an increase of 5% at the midpoint and above the $6.59 per share estimate.
While the results came in better than expected, it was not enough to fuel further gains in the stock after gaining 31% so far this year compared to a 12% increase in the S&P 500. Market players selling the stock Thursday morning point to a decline in international sales and increased marketing expenses, as well as an impending CEO transition.
