Activist Elliott Management has accumulated a large stake in Deutsche Telekom AG ( DTEGY ) ( DTEGF ) and wants the German telecom giant to walk away from a potential merger with its American arm, T-Mobile US ( TMUS ). The prominent activist investor wants Deutsche Telekom ( DTEGY ) to look at other ways to increase shareholder value, including bigger share repurchases, according to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday, which cited people familiar with the matter. Elliott had no immediate comment to Bloomberg. Deutsche Telekom declined to immediately comment. A spokesperson for T-Mobile declined to comment. ADRs of Deutsche Telekom ( DTEGY ) jumped as much as 4.8% following the report. The Elliott news comes after a Semafor report in late July that T-Mobile ( TMUS ) US executives have told controlling shareholder Deutsche Telekom ( DTEGY ) that they no longer support a potential $300 billion deal between the companies due to shareholder and possible regulatory issues. Some of T-Mobile's non-controlling shareholders, large institutional investors, have told the US wireless operator that they would be against a merger. Bloomberg reported in April that Deutsche Telekom AG ( DTEGY ) was evaluating a full combination with its American arm, TMUS.
