Anavex Life Sciences ( AVXL ) traded higher in the premarket on Friday after PVG Asset Management urged shareholders to vote in favor of its six board nominees at the neuro drug developer’s annual meeting on Sept. 24. In an open letter to Anavex ( AVXL ) shareholders, the Golden, CO-based investment manager explained why its slate of nominees is superior to the company’s nominees, who, according to PVG, lack experience in biotechnology or the central nervous system. “They are involved in other areas such as telecommunications, hospital management, and a practicing medical doctor, all with no or little investing experience in biotechnology or Anavex specifically,” PVG said. In August, Anavex ( AVXL ) nominated Gautam Patel and Adrian Senderowicz as its new independent director nominees, replacing ex-CEO Christopher Missling and director Steffen Thomas. The four incumbent Anavex directors standing for reelection collectively own only 5,000 company shares purchased in the open market, PVG said. “The Board needs to have skin in the game and own a significant number of shares,” PVG, which owns roughly 327.3K shares of the company, said, blaming the board for the company’s underperformance. “The PVG nominees all bring one thing in common: they all have very significant experience in biotechnology,” the investment advisor added.
