Four U.S. companies have pledged a combined $2B in direct investments in South Korea spanning semiconductors, advanced materials, and renewable energy, South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Friday. Air Products ( APD ) will install gas supply facilities at its next-generation semiconductor production base at Pyeongtaek, aiming to enhance the domestic materials supply chain by equipping the facility with production capabilities for ultra-high purity gas, rare gases for micro-processes, and hydrogen, which are essential for semiconductor manufacturing. Axcelis Technologies ( ACLS ) will expand production ‌of ⁠ion implantation systems at its operations in Pyeongtaek - the company's only ion implanter manufacturing base outside the U.S. - adding engineering, prototype development, and training capabilities, thus broadening the plant's role beyond production. Corning ( GLW ) will upgrade its production facility in Asan by introducing next-generation process technology to strengthen its position in advanced ​glass and ​other materials ⁠used in displays and semiconductors. Finally, Pacifico Energy will ​move forward with ⁠a 3.2 GW offshore wind project near Jindo in the country's southwest to support a new semiconductor manufacturing hub.
