Applied Materials ( AMAT ) announced on Monday that it unveiled its $5B EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California, a semiconductor R&D facility designed to accelerate chip innovation for AI. The 600K-square-foot facility brings chipmakers, equipment suppliers, and university researchers together to speed up the development and commercialization of next-generation chip technologies. Founding partners include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ), Intel ( INTC ), Samsung Electronics ( SSNLF ), Micron Technology ( MU ), and SK Hynix ( SKHY ), alongside other industry and academic partners. CEO Gary Dickerson said rising AI computing demands are making chip development more complex, increasing the need for closer industry collaboration. Similarly, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said Intel sees a path to more than 1T transistors in a package by 2030. The company expects the center to shorten development cycles and give chipmakers earlier access to new technologies. Moreover, capital spending is expected to scale to approximately $5B as customer projects commence.
