Fastenal ( FAST ) shares fell 5.3% in premarket trading Wednesday after the industrial supplies distributor reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that topped Wall Street estimates, supported by stronger manufacturing demand and growing sales to large customers. The Winona, Minnesota-based company reported revenue of $2.46 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 15.5% from $2.13 billion a year earlier. Revenue exceeded the Wall Street consensus estimate of $2.44 billion. Earnings rose to 35 cents a share, beating analysts' consensus estimate of 34 cents a share. The company didn't report a separate adjusted earnings figure in its release. The premarket decline followed a strong run for the stock. As of Tuesday's closing price, Fastenal ( FAST ) shares had gained 28% since the beginning of the year. The results offer investors a mixed picture of the industrial economy. Manufacturing customers are spending more on production supplies and equipment maintenance, while Fastenal ( FAST ) continues to gain market share through contracts with large customers. However, those customers typically command lower gross margins, putting pressure on profitability even as sales accelerate. The company's ability to offset that pressure through higher volumes and operating efficiencies remains central to its growth strategy. Third-quarter operating margin improved to 21.5% from 20.7% a year earlier, suggesting that expanding relationships with large manufacturers can produce higher overall profitability despite narrower margins on individual sales. Manufacturing demand Fastenal ( FAST ) distributes industrial and construction supplies, including fasteners, cutting tools, safety equipment and maintenance products. Its customers range from manufacturers and construction contractors to government agencies and transportation companies. Sales to manufacturing customers rose 17.2% from a year earlier, with heavy manufacturing revenue increasing 20.2%. Manufacturing accounted for 76.6% of total sales, up from 75.9% a year earlier. Nonresidential construction sales increased 12%, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of growth in that market. Sales to customers under contract rose 18.8%, compared with 7.8% growth among noncontract customers. Contract customers accounted for 76.5% of quarterly revenue, up from 73.8% a year earlier. The company attributed its sales performance to stronger customer contract signings, pricing actions and modest improvements in industrial production. Price increases contributed approximately 2.4 percentage points to quarterly revenue growth. Profit rises as costs shrink Net income rose to $401.6 million, or 35 cents a share, from $335.5 million, or 29 cents a share. Operating income climbed 20.2% to $530.8 million from $441.5 million a year earlier. Gross profit margin narrowed to 44.8% from 45.3%, primarily reflecting a greater concentration of sales among larger customers. The changing customer mix reduced gross margin by approximately 50 basis points, while the relationship between selling prices and product costs created an additional 30 basis points of pressure. Those headwinds were partially offset by savings from direct sourcing, supplier rebates and tariff refunds. Selling, general and administrative expenses declined to 23.3% of revenue from 24.6% a year earlier. Higher labor productivity and better absorption of fixed expenses helped offset increased incentive compensation and other operating costs. Digital inventory systems expand Fastenal ( FAST ) continued expanding its technology-driven inventory management business, which helps customers automate purchasing and track supplies used in factories and other industrial facilities. The company's best-known proprietary systems include FASTVend industrial vending machines, FASTBin automated inventory bins and FASTStock inventory management technology. Sales through these Fastenal Managed Inventory systems increased 14.6% to $1.12 billion, representing 44.8% of total quarterly revenue. Sales associated with the company's broader digital operations, including electronic commerce and automated inventory systems, rose 16.1% to $1.54 billion. Digital operations accounted for 61.4% of total revenue. Fastenal ( FAST ) signed agreements for 7,484 weighted FASTBin and FASTVend devices during the quarter, up 6.2% from a year earlier. However, the company lowered its full-year target for weighted device signings to between 27,000 and 29,000 units, compared with its previous goal of 28,000 to 30,000 units. The reduced target could draw investor attention as the company seeks to expand its technology-based services and deepen relationships with industrial customers. Cash flow strengthens Operating cash flow increased 9% to $421.6 million from $386.9 million a year earlier. Cash generated from operations represented 105% of quarterly net income. The company returned $328.4 million to shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases, equivalent to approximately 82% of net income. That included $298.2 million in dividends and $30.2 million in share repurchases.Total debt declined to $100 million at the end of September from $195 million a year earlier. Fastenal ( FAST ) maintained its full-year capital spending outlook of $310 million to $330 million, up from $230.6 million in 2025.The planned investments include replacing its Atlanta distribution hub, improving warehouse efficiency and expanding information technology capabilities. The company also expects increased spending on trucking equipment as it supports growing sales volumes. For investors, the next question is whether Fastenal ( FAST ) can sustain double-digit revenue growth while protecting margins. Its growing exposure to large manufacturers and automated inventory services provides opportunities for further market-share gains, although the company's reduced device-signing target and continued gross-margin pressure highlight potential obstacles to maintaining that momentum.
