GlobalFoundries ( GFS ) climbed 5% during early Wednesday market action after being selected as the provider and operator of two new fabs at its Malta, N.Y., site under a U.S.-Japan initiative to increase semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. The initiative was established through a U.S.-Japan trade and investment agreement. Japan plans to provide the investment funds, while GlobalFoundries will provide d ifferentiated technologies, manufacturing expertise, and proven operational capabilities as a technology provider and operator. The initial investment of about $10B will fund the construction of a new 300mm semiconductor fab, which is slated to come online in 2029. A second investment of approximately $10B will fund a second fab. "President Trump's historic U.S .-Japan Trade Deal is delivering another massive manufacturing investment into America," said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick . "With Japan's investment funding and GlobalFoundries' partnership, two large semiconductor chip manufacturing facilities will be built in the U.S ., creating thousands of high-paying jobs for American workers." GlobalFoundries has also amended its agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce on the use of its CHIPS and Science Act funds. The company plans to reallocate $995M of its award to increase its investments in silicon photonics, silicon-germanium, and advanced packaging at its facilities in Malta and Burlington, Vt . The projects already have customers and partners lined up to participate, including Renesas ( RNECF )( RNECY ), Tokyo Electron, Apple ( AAPL ), Cirrus Logic ( CRUS ) and General Motors ( GM ). "We've partnered with GlobalFoundries to produce essential chips for Apple products right here in the United States , as part of our $600 billion commitment to American investment," said Apple COO Sabih Khan. "As an inaugural member of Apple's American Manufacturing Program, GlobalFoundries shares our belief in the power of American innovation and ingenuity." In a separate agreement, the U.S. Department of Commerce will receive equity in GF of approximately 4%.
