After a more than sevenfold YTD jump, Moderna ( MRNA ) fell nearly 10% in afternoon trading on Friday, becoming the biggest decliner in the S&P 500 ( SP500 ) as investors await detailed results from a late-stage trial of its personalized cancer shot, intismeran autogene, developed with Merck ( MRK ). The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech has already lost over 5% this week, a notable reversal of fortunes for a company that skyrocketed more than 170% in a single session in August following topline data from the Phase 3 trial named INTerpath-001. At the time, the companies said the study, which tested intismeran with Merck’s ( MRK ) anti-PD-1 therapy Keytruda in patients with melanoma whose tumors were completely resected, met its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival. The presentation scheduled for Oct. 24 at this year’s European Society for Medical Oncology Congress is expected to shed more light on INTerpath-001, which was the first trial of its kind to outperform Keytruda in an adjuvant setting for resected melanoma. However, investors have become increasingly cautious of Moderna ( MRNA ) ahead of the readout, with Seeking Alpha analysts issuing multiple Hold and Sell ratings on the stock over the past few weeks. SA analyst Mike Zaccardi is the latest to issue a Hold recommendation, noting a valuation that “remains story- driven and speculative.”
