Mueller Industries ( MLI ) shares fell as much as 7.9% Tuesday to touch a four-month low after the copper products manufacturer reported third-quarter earnings that narrowly missed Wall Street estimates, despite a 32% increase in revenue. The Collierville, Tennessee-based company reported revenue of $1.42 billion, up 31.6% from $1.08 billion a year earlier. Revenue exceeded analysts' consensus estimate of approximately $1.28 billion by $140 million. Net income rose to $221.2 million, or $1.00 a share, from $208.1 million, or 94 cents a share, a year earlier, but earnings missed Wall Street's consensus estimate of $1.01 a share by 1 cent. The per-share figures reflect a two-for-one stock split completed in June. The results highlight the competing forces affecting manufacturers of copper tubing, piping systems and industrial components. Rising copper prices are boosting reported revenue as manufacturers pass higher material costs to customers, while construction activity remains uneven. Demand from data centers and commercial buildings is helping offset weakness in residential construction. For investors, the central issue is whether Mueller Industries ( MLI ) can sustain earnings growth as copper prices rise and the mix of customer demand changes. Although revenue surged, operating income increased only 2%, suggesting that higher sales are not translating into proportionate profit growth. The company's expanding data center exposure provides a potential growth opportunity, but the continued housing slowdown remains a challenge. Copper prices drive revenue growth Mueller Industries ( MLI ) said copper prices averaged $6.48 a pound on the COMEX exchange during the third quarter, up 34.2% from a year earlier. Higher copper costs contributed to increased selling prices across the company's businesses, while unit sales volumes also rose in most operating segments. Operating income increased to $281.6 million from $276.1 million a year earlier, a gain of approximately 2%. However, the operating margin declined to 19.8% from 25.6%, reflecting the effect of higher material costs and changes in the company's sales mix. The quarter also included $9.4 million in purchase accounting charges associated with recent acquisitions. The difference between revenue growth and operating profit growth is important for investors because higher copper prices can inflate reported sales without producing a comparable increase in earnings. Data centers offset residential construction weakness Mueller Industries ( MLI ) reported stronger performance across all three of its business segments, supported by demand for products used in data centers and commercial buildings. "For the ninth consecutive quarter, we delivered year over year earnings growth driven by stronger performance across all three of our business segments," Chief Executive Greg Christopher said in the earnings announcement. Christopher said demand remained healthy and order backlogs increased across the company's businesses, largely because of U.S. data center expansion and other commercial construction projects. The company manufactures copper tubing, fittings, valves and other components used in plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Its portfolio includes Mueller Streamline copper tube and fittings, as well as products sold under brands such as Streamline and Mueller Refrigeration. These products serve residential and commercial construction markets, along with industrial applications involving water distribution, refrigeration and electrical infrastructure. The growing need for cooling systems and electrical infrastructure at data centers represents an opportunity for manufacturers of copper-based components. However, residential construction remains under pressure, limiting demand in a market that has historically been important to the company's business. Industrial metals sales jump 64% Mueller Industries ( MLI ) reported third-quarter Piping Systems revenue of $890.6 million, up 24% from $718.4 million a year earlier. Operating income for the segment increased 4% to $225.3 million from $216.2 million. The Industrial Metals segment posted the strongest revenue growth, with sales rising 64% to $409.4 million from $248.9 million. Operating income in Industrial Metals increased 9% to $33.7 million from $30.9 million. The Climate segment reported revenue of $142.8 million, up 13% from $126.7 million a year earlier. Climate operating income rose 19% to $46.3 million from $38.9 million. The results show that higher sales extended across the company's operations, although profit growth varied considerably among segments. Cash reserves reach $1.48 billion Mueller Industries ( MLI ) generated $337 million in operating cash flow during the third quarter, helping increase its combined cash and short-term investments to $1.48 billion at the end of September. The company also continued returning capital to shareholders, repurchasing 3.2 million shares for approximately $201.9 million during the quarter. Share repurchases totaled 4.5 million shares during the first nine months of 2026. The company's quarterly dividend increased to 17.5 cents a share from 12.5 cents a year earlier, adjusted for the June stock split. Its current ratio, a measure of short-term financial strength, stood at 4.4, indicating substantial current assets relative to current liabilities. The large cash position gives management flexibility to pursue acquisitions, expand manufacturing operations and continue shareholder distributions. Management targets manufacturing expansion, reshoring Mueller Industries ( MLI ) said it plans to invest in North American manufacturing operations to reduce costs and bring more production closer to domestic customers. The company also intends to expand its product offerings and distribution capabilities across multiple businesses. Management expects these investments to position the company for additional growth when residential construction activity recovers and broader economic conditions improve. For investors, the outlook presents a mixed picture. Demand from data centers and commercial construction is supporting higher sales, while rising copper prices are increasing reported revenue. Yet the sharp decline in operating margins shows that revenue growth alone is not enough to ensure stronger profitability. The stock's decline Tuesday suggests investors are focusing on the earnings shortfall and margin compression rather than the substantial revenue increase. Future results will depend on whether Mueller Industries ( MLI ) can maintain pricing discipline, improve its product mix and benefit from a recovery in residential construction.
