IREN ( IREN ) has secured the necessary licenses to begin building a 300MW capacity AI data center in Spain, with operations targeted to begin in 2028, the company announced on Wednesday. The project will be built in Badajoz , Spain, and is intended to help Europe achieve its sovereign AI goals. The campus will feature closed-loop liquid cooling and will be designed to equip Nvidia's ( NVDA ) DSX AI Factory Platform. To help achieve success in Europe, IREN has established new leadership positions for the region. The Australia-based company appointed Ángel Corcóstegui as Chair of the newly established board of directors of IREN Europe, the holding company for its European operations. In addition, Roberto Purcaro has been appointed Executive Director for Europe and joins the board. "For customers in Europe , sovereign AI starts with two questions: where their data sits and who’s running the infrastructure," said Daniel Roberts , co-founder and co-CEO of IREN. "That's what IREN Europe is for: our own sites, run by our own people, with a board that's accountable in Europe . Ángel and Roberto have spent their careers building and financing infrastructure globally and in Iberia, and Badajoz is the first project in Europe." IREN shares edged up 1.5% during early market action on Wednesday. The stock has sank 58% since June 1.
