Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies ( WAB ) raised its full-year earnings forecast Wednesday after reporting third-quarter profit that exceeded Wall Street expectations, although revenue fell short of estimates. The Pittsburgh-based rail equipment manufacturer reported adjusted earnings of $2.83 a share, beating analysts' consensus estimate of $2.73 by $0.10. Revenue rose 8.1% to $3.12 billion from $2.89 billion a year earlier, missing the consensus estimate of $3.20 billion by $80 million. Net income rose to $409 million, or $2.42 a share, from $310 million, or $1.81 a share, a year earlier. Shares of Wabtec ( WAB ) were little changed Wednesday. The stock has gained 33% since the beginning of the year. The results highlight the growing importance of higher-margin services, digital technology and aftermarket equipment to Wabtec ( WAB ), which supplies locomotives, braking systems and other products to freight and passenger rail operators worldwide. While locomotive deliveries remain uneven, demand for maintenance, modernization and digital systems is helping the company expand profitability. For investors, the combination of rising margins and a growing order backlog suggests that Wabtec ( WAB ) has opportunities to increase earnings faster than revenue. However, the quarterly sales shortfall raises questions about the pace of equipment demand, particularly as North American railcar production remains under pressure. Acquisitions also contributed to growth, making underlying organic demand an important measure of the company's performance. Profit margins expand Wabtec ( WAB ) reported a GAAP operating margin of 20%, up from 17% a year earlier. Its adjusted operating margin increased to 22.9% from 21%, reflecting higher sales, improved gross margins and operating efficiencies. Adjusted earnings rose 22% from $2.32 a share a year earlier, while GAAP earnings increased 33.7%. “Wabtec delivered another strong quarter, evidenced by sales growth, margin expansion and a 22% increase in adjusted EPS,” Chairman and Chief Executive Rafael Santana said in the earnings announcement. The company's gross margin improved to 37.3% from 34.7%, while operating income climbed to $625 million from $491 million. Acquisitions contributed $114 million to quarterly revenue growth, while organic sales increased $137 million. Foreign exchange reduced revenue by $5 million and portfolio optimization efforts reduced it by another $12 million. Benefits of digital demand Wabtec's ( WAB ) Freight segment generated revenue of $2.24 billion, up 6.9% from $2.09 billion a year earlier. Services revenue increased 6.7%, supported by demand for maintenance and higher locomotive modernization deliveries. Digital sales jumped 24.2%, benefiting from the acquisition of Frauscher Sensor Technologies and strong demand for existing digital products. The company's digital portfolio includes rail monitoring, train control and asset management technologies. Its best-known products include Evolution Series diesel-electric locomotives, FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives and Trip Optimizer, a system designed to improve locomotive fuel efficiency. Equipment sales increased just 0.3% as stronger mining equipment demand was largely offset by fewer locomotive deliveries. Components revenue rose 5.3%, supported by industrial, maintenance-of-way and international demand. Those gains helped offset weaker North American railcar production and the effects of portfolio optimization. Despite the modest equipment growth, the Freight segment's profitability improved significantly. Its adjusted operating margin increased to 26.4% from 24.5%, benefiting from higher gross margins and lower operating expenses relative to sales. Transit sales climb The Transit segment reported revenue of $883 million, up 11.3% from $793 million a year earlier. Growth reflected the acquisition of Dellner Couplers, increased original equipment sales and stronger aftermarket demand. Unfavorable currency movements partly offset those gains. On a constant-currency basis, Transit revenue increased 12.5%. The segment supplies braking systems, couplers, doors and other equipment for passenger trains, metros and other transit vehicles. Its adjusted operating margin improved to 18.1% from 15.5%, reflecting stronger gross margins that more than offset higher operating expenses as a percentage of revenue. Order backlog rises 23% Wabtec ( WAB ) reported a total order backlog of $31.44 billion at the end of September, up 22.9% from $25.58 billion a year earlier. The company's 12-month backlog increased 8.8% to $8.99 billion from $8.27 billion. The larger multiyear backlog provides visibility into future revenue, particularly in locomotive equipment, modernization projects and passenger rail systems. Excluding currency fluctuations, the total backlog increased 21.4% from a year earlier. The Freight segment accounted for $25.77 billion of the total backlog, while Transit represented $5.67 billion. Cash flow strengthens Cash generated from operations increased to $455 million from $367 million a year earlier, primarily reflecting higher net income. During the quarter, Wabtec ( WAB ) repurchased $305 million of its shares and paid $52 million in dividends. The company ended September with approximately $489 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash, compared with total debt of $6.38 billion. Available liquidity totaled $2.09 billion, including cash and borrowing capacity under existing credit facilities. Wabtec raises 2026 guidance Wabtec ( WAB ) raised and narrowed its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to $10.85 to $11.05 a share, compared with its previous outlook of $10.60 to $10.90. The midpoint of the revised range, $10.95 a share, is above Wall Street's consensus estimate of $10.87. The new forecast represents a $0.20 increase at the midpoint and implies approximately 22% earnings growth from 2025. The company maintained its 2026 revenue forecast of $12.30 billion to $12.60 billion. The midpoint of that range implies an 11.5% increase from last year. The unchanged sales forecast, coupled with higher earnings expectations, suggests that management is relying on continued margin expansion and operating improvements to drive profit growth. For investors, the central question is whether Wabtec ( WAB ) can sustain those improvements as its order backlog converts into revenue, particularly if locomotive deliveries remain uneven and North American freight equipment demand stays soft.
