Graco ( GGG ) shares plunged 9.2% in extended trading Wednesday after the industrial equipment manufacturer reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that missed Wall Street expectations, despite record sales and growth across all its business segments. The Minneapolis-based company reported adjusted earnings of $0.81 a share, missing analysts' consensus estimate of $0.84 a share by $0.03. Adjusted earnings increased from $0.77 a share in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 7.9% to $586.4 million from $543.4 million a year earlier, falling short of Wall Street's consensus estimate of about $591 million by $4.6 million. Net income fell to $121.6 million, or $0.75 a share, from $137.6 million, or $0.82 a share, a year earlier. Shares of Graco ( GGG ) were little changed for the year through Wednesday's regular-session close, before the sharp decline in after-hours trading. The results highlight the challenges facing industrial equipment manufacturers as demand remains uneven across construction, manufacturing and other end markets. While acquisitions and stronger sales of paint spraying, powder finishing and semiconductor equipment helped lift revenue, higher product costs weighed on profitability. For investors, the earnings miss raises questions about whether the company's sales momentum can translate into stronger profit growth, particularly as management looks to emerging opportunities in data center cooling. Graco ( GGG ) makes equipment used to move, measure, dispense and spray fluids and coatings. Its products include Graco airless paint sprayers, the popular Magnum line of consumer and professional paint sprayers, Husky diaphragm pumps and industrial lubrication systems. Sales grow across businesses The company reported sales growth in all three operating segments and across its geographic regions. Organic sales increased 4%, while acquisitions contributed another 4 percentage points to overall revenue growth. The Contractor segment, which includes paint spraying and related equipment, generated revenue of $276 million, up 5.2% from $262.4 million a year earlier.Industrial segment revenue climbed 10.9% to $264.6 million from $238.6 million, benefiting from demand in professional paint, powder finishing and semiconductor applications. The Expansion Markets segment reported revenue of $45.7 million, an increase of 8% from $42.3 million a year earlier. "Graco delivered a solid quarter, with broad-based performance across our businesses and geographies," Chief Executive Mark Sheahan said in the earnings announcement. Management also reported a 7% increase in incoming organic orders during the quarter and a 4% increase for the first nine months of 2026. All three segments contributed to year-to-date order growth. The improvement in orders could provide support for future revenue, although management acknowledged that conditions across its end markets remain mixed. Higher costs weigh on profitability Operating earnings declined 10% to $148.1 million from $164.7 million a year earlier. The decline was primarily attributable to a $14.1 million noncash gain recorded in the prior-year quarter from a reduction in the estimated value of acquisition-related contingent consideration. That benefit didn't recur this year. Adjusted operating earnings, which exclude certain acquisition-related expenses and other items, increased 1% to $160.9 million from $158.7 million. The company's adjusted operating margin narrowed to about 27.4% from 29.2% a year earlier, indicating that sales growth wasn't translating into comparable gains in operating profitability. Management said price increases helped offset higher product costs during the quarter. Adjusted net income increased 2% to $131.3 million from $129.1 million. Adjusted earnings per share rose 5%, benefiting partly from a reduction in outstanding shares. The company repurchased $132 million of its stock during the third quarter, bringing year-to-date repurchases to $463 million. ABB partnership targets data center cooling Alongside its earnings announcement, Graco ( GGG ) disclosed a technology licensing agreement with ABB aimed at expanding the use of its patented Transverse Flux Motor technology in data centers. The agreement covers cooling towers, heat rejection systems and related thermal management applications. The partnership gives Graco ( GGG ) an opportunity to participate in the expanding market for data center infrastructure, where rising computing requirements are driving demand for more efficient cooling technologies.Although the company didn't disclose financial terms or revenue projections for the agreement, the initiative represents an effort to extend its technology into markets beyond its traditional industrial equipment businesses. Data center cooling has become an increasingly important area of investment as artificial intelligence workloads place greater demands on computing infrastructure and the systems needed to manage heat. For Graco ( GGG ), the opportunity could provide an additional growth avenue, though the timing and potential financial contribution remain uncertain. Q4 revenue forecast Management projected fourth-quarter revenue of $610 million to $640 million, suggesting continued sales growth from the third quarter. The forecast implies a sequential increase of approximately 4% to 9%, although seasonal patterns and acquisition contributions could affect comparisons. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue increased 4.5% to $1.72 billion from $1.64 billion a year earlier. Net income declined 1% to $385 million from $389.4 million, while adjusted net income increased 3% to $400.6 million from $387.2 million. Adjusted earnings for the nine-month period increased to $2.42 a share from $2.28 a share, a gain of 6%. The company has also changed how it calculates adjusted financial results, beginning in the second quarter of 2026. Its updated methodology excludes acquisition costs and amortization of acquired intangible assets, with prior-year figures revised for comparison. Investors will be watching whether improving orders and continued acquisition contributions can support stronger profit growth in the coming quarters. The company's ability to manage product costs and convert higher sales into operating earnings could be especially important following Wednesday's disappointing results.
