United Rentals ( URI ) shares rose 2% in extended trading Wednesday after the world's largest equipment rental company reported record third-quarter earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street estimates, driven by strong demand for construction and industrial equipment. Revenue surged 15.7% to $4.89 billion from $4.23 billion a year earlier, exceeding analysts' consensus estimate of $4.71 billion by about $180 million. Adjusted earnings jumped 33% to $15.55 a share from $11.70 a share a year earlier, beating the consensus estimate of $14.03 a share by $1.52. Net income rose to $920 million, or $14.77 a share, from $701 million, or $10.91 a share, a year earlier. The Stamford, Connecticut-based company also raised its full-year revenue outlook to $18 billion to $18.2 billion from its previous forecast of $17.5 billion to $17.8 billion. The new range exceeds Wall Street's consensus estimate of $17.76 billion. Shares of United Rentals ( URI ) had advanced 32% for the year through Wednesday's regular-session close, outperforming the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, which gained 13% over the same period. The results offer investors an encouraging signal about construction and industrial activity, particularly demand for equipment used on large projects. United Rentals ( URI ) is widely viewed as a bellwether for building activity because its customers rent machinery for commercial construction, infrastructure development and industrial projects. Stronger equipment utilization and growth in specialty rentals suggest that major projects are supporting demand, even as the broader construction market faces pressure from financing costs and economic uncertainty. The company's extensive fleet includes aerial work platforms, excavators, forklifts, skid-steer loaders, generators and earthmoving equipment. Its specialty rental operations provide equipment for trench safety, power generation, climate control, fluid management and other applications. Rental revenue climbs Equipment rental revenue increased 17.8% to a quarterly record of $4.32 billion from $3.67 billion a year earlier. The increase reflected a 7.9% rise in the average original cost of rental equipment, a 6.5% improvement in fleet productivity and a 4.9% contribution from ancillary services and equipment rented from third parties. Fleet productivity measures the combined impact of rental rates, equipment utilization and the mix of equipment rented to customers. General Rentals segment revenue rose 8.8% to a record $2.61 billion, while Specialty Rentals revenue surged 34.7% to $1.70 billion. The strong performance in specialty rentals suggests that customers are increasingly seeking specialized equipment and services for complex projects, rather than relying solely on conventional construction machinery. Specialty rental gross margins widened to 47.6% from 45.1% a year earlier. General rental gross margins improved to 38.4% from 36.7%. Used equipment sales increased 4.5% to $348 million, generating an adjusted gross margin of 46.3%, compared with 45.9% a year earlier. Large projects drive demand Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or ebitda, increased 19.8% to a record $2.33 billion from $1.95 billion a year earlier. The adjusted ebitda margin expanded to 47.6% from 46% a year earlier, reflecting improved rental profitability, operating efficiencies and a greater contribution from equipment rentals. The company said efficiencies in labor, equipment depreciation, repairs and delivery costs helped lift profitability across its general and specialty rental businesses. Net income increased 31.2%, while the net income margin widened to 18.8% from 16.6% a year earlier. Operating income climbed to $1.41 billion from $1.11 billion, an increase of approximately 26.5%. Chief Executive Matthew Flannery credited the company's broad equipment offering and continued momentum across its rental businesses. "We continued to lean into growth across both our general rentals and specialty businesses with the momentum from the first half of the year carrying through the quarter," Flannery said in the earnings announcement. Management also pointed to customer confidence, project backlogs and continued momentum on large projects as reasons for its more optimistic outlook. Full-year forecast raised United Rentals ( URI ) raised its 2026 revenue forecast to between $18 billion and $18.2 billion, up from its previous range of $17.5 billion to $17.8 billion. The midpoint of the new forecast, $18.1 billion, is approximately $340 million above analysts' consensus estimate of $17.76 billion. The company also increased its adjusted ebitda outlook to between $8.3 billion and $8.4 billion, compared with its previous projection of $7.98 billion to $8.13 billion. The higher outlook reflects management's confidence in continued equipment demand and improving fleet productivity. The company raised its forecast for net rental capital expenditures to between $3.75 billion and $4.05 billion, compared with the previous range of $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion. Gross rental equipment purchases are now expected to range from $5.2 billion to $5.5 billion, up from $4.85 billion to $5.25 billion. The increased spending suggests management expects enough demand to justify further expansion and replacement of its rental fleet. Operating cash flow is projected to range from $6.25 billion to $6.85 billion, compared with the previous forecast of $5.85 billion to $6.65 billion. Despite the higher earnings and revenue expectations, the company maintained its free cash flow forecast, excluding restructuring-related payments, at $2.15 billion to $2.45 billion. Higher planned equipment spending will absorb some of the additional cash generated by operations. Share buybacks For the first nine months of 2026, operating cash flow increased 25.4% to $4.93 billion from $3.93 billion a year earlier. Free cash flow rose 19.2% to $1.42 billion from $1.19 billion, even as the company increased investment in its equipment fleet. Gross rental capital expenditures totaled $4.75 billion during the first nine months, while cash payments for rental equipment purchases reached $4.34 billion. United Rentals ( URI ) returned nearly $1.5 billion to shareholders during the period, including $1.13 billion in share repurchases and $371 million in dividends. The company expects to complete $1.5 billion in share repurchases during 2026 and has begun a new $5 billion repurchase program. Its board also declared a quarterly dividend of $1.97 a share, payable November 25 to shareholders of record November 11. The company's net leverage ratio improved to 1.8 times at the end of September from 1.9 times at the end of 2025. Total liquidity stood at $2.62 billion. For investors, the combination of rising rental revenue, improving margins and higher guidance suggests that demand for construction and industrial equipment remains robust, particularly on large projects. The next test will be whether that momentum continues into 2027 as the company increases spending on its fleet and seeks to sustain its recent profitability gains.
