Shares of American Airlines ( AAL ) were under pressure into Thursday’s open as the carrier’s third quarter results underscored its vulnerability to rising—and unhedged—fuel costs. The U.S.’s largest airline reported a 19% increase in revenue to a record $16.3B and 14.6% increase in passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) thanks to an 18.3% gain in passenger yield. But the double-digit gains in American’s ( AAL ) topline and other cost efficiencies were not enough to offset the 67.5% surge in fuel expenses, an increase of nearly $2B from the third quarter last year, resulting in a loss of $0.28 per share, 65% wider than last year but $0.08 better than feared. “While historically high fuel prices significantly impacted our financial results, our focus remains on restoring profitability and building a stronger American for the long term,” CEO Robert Isom said. Similar to its peers, American Airlines' ( AAL ) record revenue for the quarter was driven by premium and business travel, although sizeable gains were also delivered in the carrier’s domestic and international routes. The performance of its premium segment encouraged the company to lean into further amenities for passengers. American ( AAL ) has increased its investments in member lounges, airport facilities, fleet modernization, and high-speed connectivity with plans to equip more than 500 aircraft with Starlink wi-fi. Improvements in passenger comfort, however, will not fully compensate for the high fuel prices that are expected to continue into 2027. The carrier sees jet fuel prices to be almost double the cost last year, an increase of $2.8B versus the fourth quarter of 2025. This leads American ( AAL ) to expect a loss of $0.50 to $1.10 per share in the fourth quarter and a loss of $1.00 to $1.60 per share in FY26, a change from an earlier forecast for a loss of $0.65 to a profit of $0.65 per share. This compares to estimates for a loss in the fourth quarter of $0.41 and a loss of $0.98 in FY26. Fourth-quarter estimates include the expectation that available seat miles (ASM) will increase by 5.5% to 6.5% and total revenue will increase by 19.5% to 22.5%. Costs per available seat mile (CASM) excluding special items, fuel, and profit-sharing, are expected to increase by a modest 2.5% to 3.5%. Shares last traded with a loss of nearly 4%, with peers United Airlines ( UAL ), Delta Air Lines ( DAL ), JetBlue Airways ( JBLU ), and Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) trading lower in sympathy.
