Apple's ( AAPL ) iPhone Duo appears ripe for consumer adoption as multiple consumer tech reviewers rank it as the best foldable to ever hit the market. The passport-sized smartphone that unfurls into a small tablet becomes officially available in most markets on Friday, Oct. 23. However, the high demand prompted most pre-order deliveries to be pushed back to late January. Despite being bulkier than the traditional iPhone, the weight distribution when folded makes it more comfortable to carry, according to reviewer Chance Miller at 9to5Mac . The crease when unfolded is extremely minimized due to the nanotexture technology, and the hinge feels surprisingly durable. "But it's hard to overstate just how impressive the whole thing feels in practice," he said. "The hinge feels fantastic, the smaller footprint makes it surprisingly easy to carry, and you can unfold it into a 7.6-inch display. It's an incredible piece of engineering, and even after a week, I'm still impressed by how well the entire package comes together." Although Apple was late to the foldable smartphone game, as Samsung's ( SSNLF ) Galaxy Fold first launched seven years ago, it appears to have immediately rushed to the forefront. "In Apple tradition, its first entry into an existing category feels fully mature; the Duo has significantly less jank than the first few generations of its Android counterparts," said Julian Chokkattu, a senior editor at Wired . "The infamous crease—where the phone folds—is hardly visible thanks to Apple's display stack and clever use of a matte-finish nanotexture screen. The phone is IP68 dust- and water-resistant (though avoid taking the Duo to the beach, as sand is notoriously detrimental to phone hinges). The software experience, barring the unoptimized apps, feels carefully considered." Despite the fold-out capability, multiple reviewers found themselves mostly using the phone while folded. "The inside screen really comes into its own for multitasking," said Britta O'Boyle at The Telegraph . "It was particularly useful when filling in forms (my children’s school sends these out daily), replying to emails while looking at my calendar, and sending pictures from my photo library to my family group chat by simply dragging them across. But you really have to 'lock in' to do all of this—they aren't the sort of tasks I found myself doing off the cuff." The issue several reviewers complained about was that many apps have not been optimized for the Duo's aspect ratio. However, this is mostly considered a temporary issue, as many developers have not had time to provide an update. A second issue was cost. "You don't need me to tell you that you don't need to spend $2,000 on a phone," said New York Times personal tech editor Caitlin McGarry . "Apple's iPhone 17 is perfectly good and costs $1,100 less. You could buy both a smaller phone and a tablet, such as the iPad mini, for less than what the iPhone Duo costs." A third issue was access. The Duo abandons the Face ID Apple has incorporated since 2017. Instead, users unlock the phone with Touch ID through a fingerprint sensor on the power button. Reviewers also pointed out the lack of a zoom camera, such as the one equipped in the iPhone 18 Pro.
