Meta Platforms ( META ) gave investors plenty to celebrate. Third-quarter results were better than expected, and revenue reached a record high, led by gains in advertising and its Family of Apps. And although the company raised the lower end of its capex range, the potential return on investment (ROI) in AI is already gaining momentum, evidenced by the adoption of Muse (10M users in 6 weeks) and the company’s ambitious plan to monetize its usage through transaction fees, business ties, and advertising. “Meta posted a strong beat, raised across the board, and highlighted strong early traction with Muse, which it expects to grow into a large, highly profitable business line over time,” said Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil, adding, “We continue to like Meta’s opportunities and positioning and believe the AI investments will pay off over time.” Citi Research analyst Ronald Josey agrees and sees “multiple monetization tailwinds in Meta’s AI products.” The company’s growing compute capacity gives it the ability to launch multiple new products and services and take advantage of its early entrance in the “personal agent” space. However, despite an upbeat outlook, shares are currently on the defensive, as there are lingering worries over AI spending. A recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission noted the “billions of funding needed for AI build,” with spending concerns amplified by Meta’s negative free cash flow. This suggests an equity raise in either the current quarter or the first quarter of 2027. The reaction is not unusual, however, as this is the third quarter in a row Meta ( META ) shares have turned lower after quarterly results as AI spending concerns overshadow bullish results. Negative free cash flow and lack of guidance for 2027 “essentially suggest AI capex could be peaking—and this directly confirms the bursting of the AI infrastructure bubble,” Seeking Alpha analyst Damir Tokic suggests, a view that seems to reflect some weakness in shares. It’s no secret that to make Muse profitable, Meta Platform ( META ) needs to optimize its compute costs and build out the capacity to serve more than 1 billion people over the next few years. Once the revenue lines are at scale and cost efficiencies improve, Meta ( META ) sees Muse turning a profit. “It’s costly to run Muse,” says BNP Paribas’ Nick Jones, “and this could limit the company’s willingness to scale it faster.” But to offset these higher costs, management plans to introduce monetization earlier than it typically would on other products. “Meta intends to keep the core product free and plans to collect a take rate for transactions Muse facilitates, while offering subscriptions for premium models and additional usage, business and enterprise features, and integrations with its ads and content systems,” notes Susquehanna’s Patil. “We believe the quarter showed both halves of the story working, with AI lifting monetization in the core and Muse pulling in more demand than Meta can currently serve,” says Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives, noting the company’s expectation that Muse revenue per American user will eventually exceed that of Family of Apps. “If compute efficiency continues improving quickly for another few years, which we think is highly likely, then Muse will be highly profitable over multiple years. In the near term, the strength of our core business enables us to scale the Muse network before then, and we believe that we are the best-positioned company to pursue this strategy,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the company’s earnings call with analysts. For investors, the key question is whether Meta ( META ) can turn Muse’s early traction into a profitable business before AI spending and compute costs weigh more heavily on cash flow. While the company still has significant investments to make, its growing advertising business provides a financial cushion as it scales its AI products. If Meta can improve compute efficiency and successfully monetize Muse, today’s spending could lay the groundwork for its next major growth engine.
