Arbutus Biopharma (ABUS) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has lifted the clinical hold on its investigational new drug application for AB-101, an oral PD-L1 inhibitor being developed for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
The decision allows the company to pursue further clinical development of the candidate in the United States.
AB-101 is designed to inhibit PD-L1 and potentially activate the immune response against HBV. In a completed Phase 1a/1b study, the candidate was generally well tolerated.
Data showed high receptor occupancy in seven patients with chronic HBV and a decline in hepatitis B surface antigen levels in two patients receiving the 30 mg dose.
Arbutus said it is evaluating the next steps for AB-101's continued development. The company is also developing imdusiran (AB-729) for chronic HBV infection.
Currently, ABUS is trading at $4.35, up 4.19%.
