Applied Materials has established the world’s largest research and development (R&D) center for semiconductor process technology and equipment.
Applied Materials said on Oct. 13 that it unveiled its EPIC Center in California on Oct. 12. Investment in the facility will increase gradually depending on the progress of customer projects, with total spending reaching $5 billion. The company plans to accelerate semiconductor innovation at the center alongside key partners and researchers.
The EPIC Center spans 55,700 square meters, equivalent to eight soccer fields, and includes 16,200 square meters of cleanroom space. Construction took more than 6 million work hours. Participating companies include TSMC, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Micron and SK hynix.
The EPIC Center brings together fundamental materials research, equipment and process development, and pilot production in a single location. Applied Materials said these activities were previously conducted in separate environments, and the integrated approach is intended to accelerate the commercialization of advanced semiconductor technologies.
“To gain an edge in the race for artificial intelligence (AI) leadership, we need to rethink how we collaborate to develop and commercialize next-generation semiconductor technologies,” said Gary Dickerson, president and chief executive officer of Applied Materials. “At EPIC, leading chipmakers, system design companies, equipment partners and researchers from around the world will work with our teams to drive materials innovation.”
