Hyundai Motor has adopted CATL’s latest thermal propagation (TP) control technology in its recently launched IONIQ V electric vehicle in China. Equipped with a Chinese-made lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the IONIQ V is the first electric vehicle under Hyundai’s IONIQ brand priced in the 20 million won range.
CATL said on Oct. 14 that the IONIQ V features its third-generation TP prevention technology, NP3.0 (No Propagation 3.0), according to battery safety materials released the previous day. This marks the first time the technology has been adopted in a Hyundai vehicle.
The IONIQ V is an electric vehicle developed specifically for the Chinese market and was first unveiled at the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show in April. Launched on Sept. 29, it is produced by Beijing Hyundai, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor and Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC). Its locally discounted price ranges from 99,900 yuan to 131,900 yuan (approximately 20 million to 26 million won).
Equipped with a 66.8-kilowatt-hour (kWh) LFP battery from CATL, the vehicle offers a driving range of more than 650 kilometers on a single charge under China’s Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). However, CLTC tends to produce longer range estimates than South Korea’s Ministry of Environment standard, with differences reaching as much as 200 kilometers.
CATL’s NP3.0 technology is designed to help vehicles continue moving safely even after battery thermal runaway occurs. Thermal runaway is a phenomenon in which a battery’s internal temperature rises rapidly, spreading heat to neighboring cells and potentially causing fire or explosion. CATL has developed three generations of TP prevention technology since introducing NP1.0 in 2018. NP3.0 is designed to detect abnormalities within seconds of thermal runaway, warn the driver and maintain high-voltage power supply.
CATL said its internal tests showed that vehicles could continue driving safely for at least five minutes after thermal runaway without losing power. The technology focuses on giving drivers enough time to move their vehicles to a safe location.
Hyundai’s adoption of NP3.0 comes amid tighter battery safety regulations in China. The previous national standard, GB 38031-2020, required occupants to receive a warning at least five minutes before a fire or explosion caused by battery thermal runaway. The revised standard, GB 38031-2025, which took effect in July, strengthened requirements to prevent fires or explosions even when thermal runaway occurs.
Under its “In China, For China” strategy, Hyundai has reduced costs by using locally sourced components and manufacturing facilities, enabling it to introduce a midsize electric vehicle priced in the 20 million won range. Demand for similarly affordable EVs is also growing in South Korea as Tesla rapidly expands sales with Chinese-made vehicles and Chinese automakers including BYD and Zeekr target the Korean market.
Tesla sold 11,421 Model Y vehicles in South Korea in September, surpassing Hyundai’s Grandeur sedan at 8,898 units. Tesla’s Korean sales reached 89,148 vehicles in the first nine months of the year, up 104.4% from a year earlier. Hyundai’s domestic EV sales, including Genesis, totaled just 55,733 units during the same period.
Hyundai has yet to decide whether to launch the IONIQ V in South Korea. Even if introduced, maintaining its Chinese-market price in the 20 million won range would be difficult. Eligibility for EV purchase subsidies is also uncertain, as the government revised its subsidy program this year to consider contributions to domestic supply chains and the use of locally sourced components.
Hwang Kyung-in, head of the Strategic Industry Analysis Division at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET), said automakers must weigh the benefits of lower costs against potential subsidy disadvantages. “Even if using Chinese batteries reduces EV production costs, companies need to assess the trade-offs if they face disadvantages in domestic subsidies,” he said. “Automakers must consider not only battery prices but also subsidies, supply chains and other factors.”
Hwang added that Korean battery manufacturers also need to develop cost-competitive LFP batteries for electric vehicles, while deciding where to concentrate their limited investment resources and production capacity.
