LG Electronics and Apple have jointly developed seven Internet of Things (IoT) devices for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered homes. The companies plan to launch the products in the US, Canada and the UK by the end of this year.
LG Electronics and Apple unveiled the products at a launch event in Manhattan, New York, on Oct. 13. The lineup includes an indoor camera, two outdoor cameras, a doorbell, a door lock, a thermostat and a temperature sensor. The devices connect to both LG Electronics' ThinQ AI home platform and Apple's ecosystem.
Users can pair the devices by bringing an iPhone or iPad close to them, then monitor and control their status through mobile devices. Usage history is stored in the cloud as personalized data.
The thermostat analyzes users' location, time and weather information obtained through iPhones and Apple Watches to adjust heating and cooling. Temperature sensors installed throughout the home collect room-specific data, allowing the thermostat to manage indoor temperatures accordingly.
The door lock incorporates multiple sensors that detect users' movements and intentions to enter, allowing doors to open without manual operation. It also sends mobile alerts when a door is left open or when tampering or unauthorized entry is detected.
LG Electronics has applied vision AI to the indoor and outdoor cameras and doorbell. The outdoor cameras and doorbell distinguish between people, animals, vehicles and packages. The indoor camera recognizes people and pets and detects sounds such as babies crying or glass breaking. It switches to privacy protection mode when users return home.
The companies have also incorporated security features. LG Electronics applied its proprietary LG Shield security solution, while Apple provided data encryption technology. The products are available in three colors: Essence Graphite, Essence White and Essence Silver.
LG Electronics will integrate the new devices with its ThinQ On AI home hub, ThinQ platform and AI appliances. With Apple having more than 2.5 billion active devices worldwide, LG Electronics will be able to reach iPhone and other Apple device users as potential AI home customers.
Jung Ki-hyun, vice president and head of LG Electronics' HS Platform Business Center, said, "By combining LG Electronics' expertise in home appliances and living spaces, Apple's user experience and both companies' security capabilities, we will provide a safe and intuitive AI home experience."
