Laser air defense weapons developed with Hanwha Systems’ participation successfully intercepted all three drones during a South Korean Army exercise.
Hanwha Systems said on Oct. 15 that the Cheongwang laser air defense weapon and a 30-kilowatt (kW) vehicle-mounted laser cannon completed drone interception demonstrations during the Army TIGER+ future warfare integrated combat exercise organized by Army Headquarters on Oct. 14. The two weapon systems shot down all three drones deployed in the exercise.
Cheongwang is a Block-I laser air defense weapon developed by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), with Hanwha Systems serving as the prototype contractor. The weapon has been deployed for operational use. It requires no conventional ammunition and operates solely on electricity, with each shot costing about 2,000 won.
The 30kW laser cannon demonstrated alongside Cheongwang is a mobile weapon system developed under Hanwha Systems’ leadership. Its key components have been miniaturized and made lighter for installation on combat vehicles. The system also incorporates phase-change cooling technology to manage heat generated during high-power operation.
Cheongwang also consecutively intercepted four drones and two unmanned aerial vehicles at the 2026 Defense Drone Technology Exhibition last month. Hanwha Systems is developing a 50kW laser-equipped armored vehicle with increased power output for overseas markets, targeting completion in 2027.
“We will target the global defense market based on our Cheongwang system and high-power laser weapon technologies,” said Shin Joo-hoon, head of Hanwha Systems’ Laser Business Center.
