CrowdStrike announced on Oct. 19 that it had identified organizations and locations linked to so-called laptop farms and worked with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to disrupt their operations.
Laptop farms are facilities where multiple laptops are housed in one location. North Korea-linked threat groups used these facilities as fictitious residences to obtain jobs at US companies under false identities. The salaries earned through these jobs were then transferred to the North Korean regime.
Between April and June, CrowdStrike’s Counter Adversary Operations team identified fake identities, technical indicators and computers in the United States used by the North Korea-linked threat group FAMOUS CHOLLIMA in fraudulent employment schemes. Using telemetry collected by security systems, the team uncovered a network of US-based facilitators.
According to CrowdStrike, the attackers used several methods to have laptops delivered to their facilities. They falsely reported laptops as stolen to obtain replacements shipped to laptop farms or alternated between multiple addresses to conceal the final destination. In some cases, they changed delivery addresses shortly before shipment, claiming to have moved.
Affected companies operated across various industries, including aerospace, energy, finance, healthcare and defense.
“The disruption will only temporarily slow activities in the affected areas,” CrowdStrike said, adding that the attackers would continue evolving their methods to evade detection and disruption by law enforcement.
Founded in 2011, CrowdStrike is a global cybersecurity company providing cloud-based endpoint detection and response (EDR), extended detection and response (XDR), cloud security, identity security, security information and event management (SIEM), and threat intelligence (TI). Its flagship product is Falcon, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) endpoint security platform integrating EDR with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered detection and response capabilities.
CrowdStrike reported second-quarter revenue of $1.47 billion and non-GAAP operating profit of $371.6 million. The figures represented quarter-on-quarter increases of 6.1% and 14.1%, respectively.
