Boeing has asked Hanwha Systems to replace liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels in fighter jets.
Other defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, have also expressed interest in adopting OLED technology. The South Korean government and Hanwha Systems want LG Display, which has experience developing military LCDs, to participate, but the limited market size remains an obstacle.
According to industry sources on Oct. 20, Hanwha Systems recently received a request from Boeing to transition fighter jet displays to OLED and is reviewing development options. The company currently supplies large area displays (LADs) for Boeing's F-15 fighter jet series. It believes OLED products could be developed within two to three years if the necessary development conditions are established.
Demand could expand to other defense contractors. "Companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin want to replace existing LCDs with OLEDs, but they are waiting for new panels while considering deployment timing and suitability," an industry official said. Potential applications include F-15 fighters, F/A-18 fighters and Apache attack helicopters undergoing service-life extensions. Potential replacement demand is estimated at 3,000 to 5,000 aircraft.
European defense markets are also considered potential customers outside the United States. The number of military LCD manufacturers is declining, while restrictions on Chinese-made components in some countries could make South Korean OLED panels an alternative.
LG Display previously developed military LCD panels for the KF-21 and F-15. The company secured technology that allows the left and right screens to operate independently while eliminating the visible boundary between them. However, it discontinued related LCD production in 2021, and Hanwha Systems currently sources panels from Taiwanese and Japanese suppliers.
Profitability remains the main challenge. Fighter jet OLED displays require high brightness for visibility under strong sunlight, long operating lifespans, and technologies that reduce interference with night-vision goggles and light reflections. Specialized materials, optical designs and military-grade reliability testing entail substantial development costs. A complete fighter cockpit display system costs approximately $1 million, while an individual LCD panel costs as much as a midsize car. However, Hanwha Systems estimates that it could realistically secure orders for only several thousand units.
For LG Display, recovering development costs would be difficult even if it developed customized OLED panels in small volumes. Differences in order timing and quantities among customers also make it difficult to secure stable mass-production volumes. "The volume that can be stated with confidence is only a few thousand units at most," an industry official said. "It is certainly not an easy project for Hanwha Systems or LG Display to pursue independently."
The government is also pursuing OLED technology development for fighter jets. Lee Min-woo, director general for industrial growth at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, said at a Display Day event on Sept. 17 that the ministry was planning a research and development (R&D) project with LG Display and Hanwha Systems for fighter cockpit OLED displays. If the project proceeds, LG Display would develop the panels and Hanwha Systems would integrate them into avionics equipment. Universities and research institutes could support materials development and reliability testing.
The ministry is considering R&D support and measures to expand cooperation networks to secure additional demand. "The government respects companies' profitability assessments," a ministry official said. "Even if direct support is difficult, we will explore indirect measures to strengthen networks and generate demand."
