Kolon Industries said on Oct. 21 that it will establish an airbag fabric manufacturing plant in Vietnam to expand supplies to Swedish automotive safety components maker Autoliv.
Kolon Industries held a groundbreaking ceremony for the plant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Oct. 20. Attendees included Kolon Industries President Heo Sung, Park Yong-woo, head of the company’s Advanced Mobility Solutions (AMS) division, Christian Swan, senior vice president of purchasing at Autoliv, and Ali Elitok, purchasing director at Autoliv.
The company will invest approximately 70 billion won to fulfill an airbag fabric supply contract signed with Autoliv in December 2025. Construction is scheduled for completion in June 2027, with deliveries beginning in January 2028. Kolon Industries plans to stabilize production and increase supply volumes through 2029. From 2030, the plant is expected to generate more than 50 billion won in annual revenue.
The company will install new weaving, processing and coating equipment, vertically integrating production from fabric manufacturing to airbag cushion production. Its existing Vietnamese plant manufactures airbag cushions using fabric produced in South Korea and China. Kolon Industries plans to apply advanced production technologies to strengthen its technological competitiveness over the long term.
“The new Vietnam plant is an investment aimed at ensuring a stable supply of world-class airbag materials to Autoliv, one of our major customers,” Heo said. “We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in the global automotive materials market through differentiated technologies and manufacturing capabilities.”
