Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a game developed with technical support from Samsung Electronics since its early stages, has sparked controversy over its depiction of a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea.
Activision, a subsidiary of Microsoft, launched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 globally on Oct. 23. Development was led by Activision subsidiary Infinity Ward. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The game is set against the backdrop of a war on the Korean Peninsula triggered by a full-scale North Korean invasion. Players take on the role of Park Hyun-jun, a private in the South Korean Marine Corps, fighting against North Korean forces. The storyline includes attacks on central Seoul and counteroffensives by combined South Korean and US forces. Early players have also drawn attention to a scene depicting an attack on North Korea’s presidential palace.
Although the Korean Peninsula serves as the game’s primary setting, combat extends to locations around the world. Missions include close-quarters combat in New York, a chase through Paris and a nighttime surprise operation in Mumbai, India.
Samsung Electronics provided technical support from the early stages of the game’s development.
In August, Samsung announced an official partnership with Activision Blizzard for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. At the time, the company said it had collaborated with the developer from the early stages to incorporate its display technology into the game.
The companies also conducted joint marketing activities. In August, Samsung distributed beta test codes to 50,000 Samsung Gaming Hub users. At Gamescom 2026 in Germany, the company operated a demonstration area where visitors could experience the new game on Samsung Odyssey monitors and distributed 500 game codes.
Samsung described the game as inspired by Korean content, with South Korea serving as a major setting.
“We are pleased to introduce an elevated Call of Duty gaming experience to gamers worldwide through the outstanding picture quality of Samsung TVs and Odyssey monitors,” said Lee Heon, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, at the time.
Activision first unveiled the game in May, announcing a full-scale North Korean invasion as a central scenario. That was approximately three months before Samsung announced its official partnership.
The game has also attracted attention following comments from politicians.
On Oct. 20, Ahn Cheol-soo, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, referred to the game in a Facebook post criticizing President Lee Jae-myung’s remarks about North Korea’s nuclear weapons. Ahn argued that those unaware of the risks posed by North Korean provocations should play the game or watch gameplay footage.
Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon also mentioned the game in a Facebook post on Oct. 23, referring to its depiction of Seoul becoming a battlefield following a surprise North Korean invasion. “I hope the Seoul depicted in the game remains purely fictional,” Han wrote, recommending that President Lee play the game himself.
Players have expressed mixed reactions to the game’s storyline. Some said its depiction of a North Korean invasion highlights the importance of national security. Others raised concerns about using the realities of Korea’s division and the devastation of war as material for a commercial video game.
