Spot uranium prices have been holding near $90 a pound, yet uranium mining shares have been sinking. The divergence suggests the market is pricing in a gap between renewed enthusiasm for nuclear power and the earnings investors can expect from its suppliers.
Sprott Physical Uranium Trust, a proxy for spot price, is nearly flat for the year, yet Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (NYSE:URNM) has declined more than 23%. The miners’ fund climbed more than 38% earlier in the year before reversing sharply.

AI’s seemingly insatiable appetite for electricity has brought nuclear energy back to the top of the clean-energy list. Yet even resilient fuel pricing and power agreements involving Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) haven’t stopped the equity retreat.
Contracts Delay the Payoff
According to Kalkin, Cameco Corp. (NYSE:CCJ), the world’s largest uranium producer, had a first-quarter realized uranium price of $65.45 a pound, well below the subsequent futures benchmark.
The disconnect from spot prices reflects the industry reality. Uranium contracts are long-dated, spanning years, and higher prices don’t immediately translate into higher producer revenue like with many other commodities.
Supply constraints nevertheless persist. Delays at Kazatomprom’s TQZ sulphuric acid plant are limiting the leaching process used to extract uranium at its in-situ operations.
“High prices did not really cure high prices,” Independent Speculator’s Lobo Tiggre said in a recent interview, arguing that stronger prices had not unleashed the anticipated supply surge.
Execution and financing risks remain significant. Reactor developer NuScale Power Corporation (NYSE:SMR) has fallen 53% year to date, even though its outlook depends more on reactor deployment than uranium prices.
Tiggre also suggested doubts about returns on artificial-intelligence spending could be weighing on uranium shares, now treated partly as an AI infrastructure trade.
Buying the Disconnect
After building cash through profit-taking in precious-metals equities, Tiggre said he had begun adding to uranium holdings.
“Right now, the most compelling speculation I see in the whole commodity sector is the other yellow metal,” he said. “It’s actually uranium.”
His argument centers on spot uranium trading in the low $90s while long-term contracts command prices in the high $90s. He described the lag behind a rising term benchmark as unusually prolonged.
He argued that nine months of disappointing price action matters little against nuclear projects’ multidecade horizons. He also cited an Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) nuclear-power agreement as evidence of strengthening demand.
“When price and value diverge, there’s opportunity,” he said.
