Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) raised its full-year profitability outlook during its third-quarter earnings call Tuesday, citing stronger revenue growth and improving business performance. However, management warned that trading revenue could decline sharply in the fourth quarter due to seasonal weakness.
The bank reported third-quarter net income of $5.2 billion, up 17% year over year, with earnings per share of $2.85. Revenue rose 8% to $23.8 billion, marking its strongest third-quarter revenue performance in a decade.
Return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) reached 11.5%, an improvement of 180 basis points from a year earlier.
Citigroup Raises Full-Year Outlook
Citigroup now expects full-year 2026 ROTCE to exceed 11%, compared with its previous target range of 10% to 11%.
The bank also raised its net interest income growth forecast, excluding Markets, to the mid-to-high 6% range. Its initial forecast called for growth of 5% to 6%.
Management expects its full-year efficiency ratio to remain below 60%, supported by revenue growth and tighter expense controls.
However, Chief Financial Officer Gonzalo Luchetti cautioned that Markets revenue could decline by approximately 20% or slightly more sequentially in the fourth quarter.
The bank recorded a similar seasonal decline last year. CEO Jane Fraser emphasized that the outlook reflects normal year-end trading patterns rather than a deterioration in the business.
AI Delivers Measurable Cost Savings
Fraser highlighted growing financial benefits from artificial intelligence, saying the technology is helping Citigroup cut expenses, accelerate product launches and improve customer service.
The bank has reduced technology vendor spending by 30% year over year as it brings more work in-house. About 14,000 engineers now use Devin, its primary agentic coding tool.
AI has also accelerated product development, helping Citigroup launch new offerings 30% to 40% faster.
Meanwhile, the bank is redesigning approximately 100 manual processes using AI and automation to improve efficiency.
Fraser said the financial benefits from AI and automation have already significantly exceeded the bank’s related investments so far this year.
Citigroup’s AI-powered customer service tools now operate in 82 countries, improving client response times by 21%.
Banking and Wealth Businesses Gain Momentum
Citigroup’s Services and Wealth divisions each reported 15% revenue growth during the quarter.
Services generated $2.6 billion in net income and delivered ROTCE of 31.2%, supported by deposit growth and increased client activity.
Wealth attracted $38 billion in net new investment assets, more than double the year-earlier level. The division’s ROTCE reached 14.3%.
Markets revenue increased 6%, driven by 14% growth in equities revenue and a 4% increase in fixed income revenue.
Investment banking revenue rose 9%, supported by a 77% jump in equity capital markets revenue.
Fraser said the investment banking pipeline remains solid, with continued activity in advisory, refinancing and capital markets.
Higher Interest Rates Present Opportunities and Risks
Luchetti said a prolonged period of elevated interest rates could benefit Citigroup because of its overall asset-sensitive balance sheet.
The bank expects its global Services business to benefit from higher rates, although competition for deposits and tighter liquidity could offset some gains.
However, management warned that sustained rate increases could eventually pressure lower-credit-quality consumers and corporate borrowers.
Fraser also highlighted potential refinancing risks as companies approach a significant debt maturity cycle over the next three years.
Despite those concerns, she said Citigroup has not observed a slowdown in AI infrastructure investment.
Fraser said higher interest rates are unlikely to derail artificial intelligence investments, as demand for computing capacity continues to outpace supply. “We’re not seeing a slowdown in investment in the broader AI ecosystem,” Fraser said during Tuesday’s third-quarter earnings call. “There’s simply not enough compute,” she added, noting that energy shortages remain a bottleneck requiring further investment.
Shareholder Returns and Capital Position
Citigroup returned more than $4 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including $3 billion in share repurchases.
Year-to-date buybacks reached $13.3 billion, exceeding the $13 billion repurchased during all of 2025.
The bank ended September with a common equity tier 1 capital ratio of 12.8%, approximately 120 basis points above its current regulatory requirement.
Citigroup also expects to deconsolidate Banamex in early 2027, resulting in an approximately $9 billion cumulative translation adjustment loss recognized through earnings.
However, management expects the deconsolidation process to be slightly beneficial to its CET1 capital ratio.
Looking ahead, Citigroup reiterated its near-term ROTCE goal of 11% to 13% for 2027 and 2028, with a longer-term objective of achieving sustainable returns of 14% to 15%.
C Price Action: Citigroup shares were up 0.46% at $125.10 during premarket trading on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
