The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) heads into third-quarter earnings with a habit of making Wall Street look conservative. Three months ago, the property and casualty insurer posted core earnings of $10.04 per share, nearly double the $5.28 analysts expected.

The Street has raised the bar since then. Analysts expect EPS of $7.01 when Travelers reports before the open on Friday. Investors have already priced in plenty of good news. Shares are up about 30% this year and trade near $377.
Travelers will report its earnings before the market opens on Oct. 16.
Lower Claims Lifted Q2 Profits
Lower catastrophe costs helped drive the second-quarter earnings surprise, with losses dropping to $518 million from $927 million a year earlier. Favorable reserve development across all three segments and a 14% increase in investment income also boosted results.
Core return on equity reached 24.9%, and shares rallied 8.5% following the report.
The third quarter also passed without a U.S. hurricane landfall, with the Atlantic season’s first hurricane forming Oct. 7.
That leaves catastrophe losses as a key variable to watch, although the absence of hurricanes alone does not establish how much Travelers will owe in weather-related claims.
Pricing Pressure Builds
The bigger question may be whether Travelers can sustain premium growth as competition weighs on pricing. Primary commercial insurance rates declined 6% in the second quarter, while global property rates fell 12%, according to the Marsh Global Insurance Market Index.
Travelers’ third-quarter revenue missed expectations last year as its commitment to underwriting discipline constrained growth in large commercial property. This report offers another test of that trade-off: protecting margins without giving up too much business.
Analysts Remain Cautious
Benzinga’s analyst data show a Neutral consensus across 22 analysts, comprising one Strong Buy, six Buy, 11 Hold and four Sell ratings. The average price target is $339, implying 9.2% downside.
Capital returns provide another focus. Travelers repurchased $1.31 billion in shares during the second quarter and finished with $3.9 billion remaining under its authorization.
The central question is how much earnings strength can persist beyond favorable weather. Renewal pricing, underlying underwriting margins and management’s assessment of fourth-quarter catastrophe exposure could matter more than the size of another earnings beat.
