Patrick Witt, the White House’s top crypto adviser, has left his role after his temporary detail expired, making him the third senior crypto official to exit President Donald Trump’s administration this year.
Why Witt’s Departure Comes Now
A White House official told The Block Wednesday that Witt’s “detail has expired,” adding that the administration “appreciates his time and service” and wishes him well.
Eleanor Terrett of Crypto In America had reported earlier that Witt was actually a Department of Defense employee on temporary assignment to the Crypto Council, not a permanent White House hire. That temporary detail had either already expired or was about to.
Witt had originally planned to leave the White House in July for mandatory training with the Georgia Army National Guard, but that training got postponed. The White House did not say who would replace him.
What Witt Was Working On
As executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, Witt led efforts to pass the Clarity Act, broad crypto market-structure legislation the House passed over a year ago.
He later worked to guide negotiations in the Senate, where the bill ran into trouble over how to treat stablecoin rewards and ethics provisions tied to Trump’s own crypto holdings.
That last issue became the sticking point last month. Democrats raised concerns that the ethics language wouldn’t be enforceable, since the Justice Department, not individual states, would decide whether to pursue enforcement action against the president.
The bill failed its initial procedural vote as a result.
Why This Marks a Pattern, Not a One-Off
Witt is the third senior crypto official to leave the administration this year:
- David Sacks, White House Crypto and AI Czar, departed in March once his 130 days as a special government employee ran out
- Harry Jung, Witt’s own deputy director, left in July
- Patrick Witt, now the third departure, leaves the Crypto Council with no remaining staffer
Blockchain Association Chief Policy Officer Lindsay Fraser credited Witt with holding negotiations together through the toughest moments, saying he never lost sight of what American leadership in the technology demanded and brought every side to the table when issues got hardest.
Solana Policy Institute President Kristin Smith agreed, crediting Witt’s work for helping move a difficult crypto market structure debate forward.
Witt himself struck an upbeat tone leaving, posting on X Wednesday that serving in the administration “has been the privilege of a lifetime” and thanking Trump, Sacks, and a long list of White House and congressional colleagues.
He called himself “extremely bullish on America” heading into what he described as a new era of technological advancement, and said he plans to continue that work in the private sector.
With the Crypto Council now empty and the Clarity Act stalled in the Senate, a real question remains over how committed the White House still is to Trump’s promise of making the US the “crypto capital of the world.”
