Hyperliquid Labs co-founder and CEO Jeff Yan says his platform’s goal is to “house all of finance,” now spanning perpetual futures on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and crude oil.
How Hyperliquid Actually Works
Yan told Bloomberg’s Odd Lots podcast that Hyperliquid as measured by Hyperliquid Strategies (NASDAQ:PURR) runs as a blockchain protocol rather than a traditional exchange, with a permissionless network of validators maintaining a single shared ledger.
Anyone wanting to list a new market, called a “deployer,” must stake 500,000 HYPE tokens to unlock that ability.
Deployers then compete for listing slots through a Dutch auction held roughly every 31 hours, where the price starts high and drops over time until someone claims the slot.
That structure resists the gaming common in traditional bidding wars, where participants often sit back and withhold bids until the very last moment, according to Yan.
Where Institutional Adoption Stands
Every perpetual contract on Hyperliquid tracks an external reference price called an oracle, since the contract itself never expires or settles the way a traditional futures contract would.
Trade XYZ, one of the platform’s active deployers, runs the oracle system behind its Nvidia and SK Hynix perpetuals.
That system has had hiccups. Yan pointed to an earlier incident where a bad price quote from SK Hynix sent the oracle sharply off track, leading to losses that the company later refunded after publishing a detailed postmortem.
To guard against that kind of dislocation spiraling, Hyperliquid’s protocol caps how much an oracle price can move between updates at 1%.
Running a validator node requires roughly 128 gigabytes of RAM, modest consumer-grade hardware rather than the massive data centers some assume power the network.
Yan called that accessibility intentional, keeping the barrier to running infrastructure low even as trading volume scales.
Yan said most large traders currently active on Hyperliquid are institutions, given the sophistication required to market-make effectively.
He pushed back on the idea that banks and asset managers will eventually get disrupted by the platform, instead comparing Hyperliquid’s potential role to how Amazon’s AWS complemented rather than replaced existing businesses.
Why US Traders Still Can’t Access It Legally
U.S.-based traders remain barred from Hyperliquid under its terms of service, though Yan noted some get around that using VPNs, something he explicitly discouraged.
He said regulatory clarity from the CFTC would need to catch up with the technology’s transparency properties, like the ability to verify user balances match the platform’s holdings in real time, before legal access becomes possible.
President Donald Trump referenced Hyperliquid earlier this year while discussing efforts to bring the platform into US regulatory compliance, though Yan said he had no advance knowledge the comment was coming.
