SOXX Vs. SMH: Which ETF Faces More Risk as CoreWeave Debt Crisis Rattles AI Stocks?
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) are under pressure as CoreWeave I…
不做 CoreWeave(CRWV.US)
NVIDIA(NVDA.US)
VanEck Semiconductor ETF(SMH.US)
不做 iShares Semiconductor ETF(SOXX.US)

The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) are under pressure as CoreWeave Inc.’s (NASDAQ:CRWV) debt troubles raise fresh questions about the sustainability of the artificial intelligence boom.
SOXX fell 4.5% on Wednesday and was down a further 4.22% as of publication on Thursday, heading into its eighth straight session of losses. Meanwhile, SMH dropped 4% on Wednesday and is down 4.05% on Thursday morning, as investors reassessed the outlook for AI chipmakers. CoreWeave shares plunged 15.46% on Wednesday and fell further by 9% on Thursday as rising bond yields intensified concerns about the company’s debt-funded expansion.
The sell-off highlights how rising debt concerns among AI infrastructure companies could put further pressure on chip stocks, with semiconductor ETFs facing varying risk depending on their exposure to Nvidia and other major chipmakers.
Nvidia’s CoreWeave Connection Raises the Stakes
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) invested $2 billion in CoreWeave in January 2026, when the companies announced plans to build more than five gigawatts of AI infrastructure by 2030.
CoreWeave purchases Nvidia GPUs and rents computing capacity to customers, including major technology companies. That relationship makes CoreWeave’s financial health relevant to Nvidia, which benefits from continued investment in AI computing infrastructure.
The concern is that higher borrowing costs could force infrastructure providers to reconsider expansion plans, potentially affecting future demand for GPUs, memory chips and other semiconductor components.
Gartner has also warned that more than 80% of neocloud providers could cease independent operations by 2030, citing cost pressures and insufficient differentiation.
SMH vs. SOXX: Concentration Could Make a Difference
SMH may be particularly sensitive to Nvidia-driven volatility. Nvidia accounts for about 20.04% of the fund’s portfolio.
SOXX also offers significant exposure to leading chipmakers, although its portfolio is more diversified across semiconductor companies. Its extended losing streak suggests the pressure isn’t limited to CoreWeave or Nvidia alone.
The SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:XSD) provides a useful contrast. With a more evenly weighted portfolio, it reduces dependence on any single semiconductor giant, potentially limiting the impact of a sharp move in Nvidia.
The differences matter because a broader reassessment of AI infrastructure spending could affect semiconductor companies unevenly, depending on their exposure to Nvidia, data-center investment and other end markets.
Is the AI Trade Losing Momentum?
CoreWeave’s debt problems do not necessarily mean semiconductor demand is collapsing. Strong AI investment by major technology companies could continue supporting chipmakers.
However, investors may increasingly distinguish between demand for AI computing and infrastructure providers’ ability to finance that demand profitably.
For ETF investors, the key question is whether CoreWeave’s financing stress remains an isolated problem or signals a broader reassessment of AI capital expenditure. If the latter takes hold, Nvidia-heavy funds such as SMH could be more volatile than more diversified semiconductor portfolios.
