The AI sell-off is forcing investors to choose between two very different ways to profit from the same boom: chips that power AI computing and memory that helps those systems process data. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) has fallen more than 35% from its peak, while Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) offers a seemingly inexpensive earnings multiple.
But the cheaper stock may not be the safer bet.
Broadcom’s Custom Silicon Advantage
Broadcom’s appeal rests on a business model that is harder to replicate than a conventional chip cycle. The company works with major technology customers to develop custom AI accelerators and networking chips, giving it a role in the infrastructure behind increasingly complex AI workloads.
The growth is tangible. In its second-quarter fiscal 2026 results, Broadcom reported $10.8 billion in AI semiconductor revenue, up 143% year over year. CEO Hock Tan said demand for custom accelerators and AI networking was driving the momentum, with AI semiconductor revenue projected to reach $16 billion in the following quarter.
That gives Broadcom a potentially durable advantage: customers need increasingly sophisticated silicon to build AI infrastructure, and switching chip designs is not as simple as changing suppliers for an off-the-shelf component.
Chart created using Benzinga Pro
But the recent sell-off has exposed another risk. Tan’s October comments comparing AI investment enthusiasm to a casino helped fuel concerns about speculative spending and unrealistic expectations. The warning matters even for a company benefiting from that spending.
Strong demand today does not guarantee customers will earn enough from AI to sustain the same pace of investment indefinitely.
Micron’s Cheap Valuation Has a Catch
Micron’s opportunity is different. Its high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which moves data quickly between processors and memory, has become essential to AI accelerators. The company’s fiscal 2026 results showed $133.19 billion in annual revenue, compared with $37.38 billion the previous year. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said strategic customer agreements were adding confidence to the durability of its financial performance.
At a P/E of 11.82 and forward earnings multiple at just 5, per Benzinga Pro data, Micron’s valuation looks compelling. However, memory is a cyclical business: prices can surge when supply is tight, lifting profits and making a stock look cheap just before earnings normalize. That multiple is therefore not a guarantee of undervaluation.
Which Stock Offers Better Risk-Reward?
The distinction is what investors are betting on. Broadcom offers exposure to custom AI silicon and networking, where long-term customer relationships and design complexity can help protect its position. Micron offers a more direct bet on the supply-demand balance for advanced memory, where shortages can generate extraordinary profits but eventual supply growth can pressure pricing.
Micron also faces a competitive challenge from China. ChangXin Memory Technologies‘ projected revenue surge has revived concerns about Chinese memory manufacturers becoming more formidable competitors, even as AI demand remains strong. Broadcom, meanwhile, is not immune to customer concentration or the possibility that AI spending disappoints.
For investors choosing between the two, Broadcom looks like the stronger long-term business, while Micron could offer greater upside if memory demand and pricing remain unusually strong.
The next test is whether upcoming earnings and spending guidance validate current expectations. If AI infrastructure investment holds up, both can recover; if customers pull back, Micron’s earnings could prove more vulnerable to a downturn.
