Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is directing recent tariff refunds toward expanding its United States manufacturing capacity, according to Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk and Taneja detailed this strategy during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, emphasizing the physical labor required to scale domestic operations.
Channeling Tariff Refunds
Tesla reported that energy gross margins improved sequentially from 20.4% to 33.1% in the third quarter. Taneja stated this increase is “primarily attributed to tariff refunds recognized in the quarter and warranty true-downs resulting from alignment with our vendor on certain cell-related costs to be reimbursed by them.”
The company plans to use this capital to increase its domestic manufacturing footprint. “The money that we received from the tariff refunds is being reinvested to expand production capacity in the U.S.,” Taneja said.
Taneja set expectations for the physical execution of this expansion, stating, “I’d like to stress that we like to do a lot of hardcore, real grunt work to get production facilities up and running.”
Looking ahead, Taneja noted that capital expenditures “for the next few years would continue to expand as we add more Robotaxi fleet, we expand our production capacity for Optimus, install manufacturing capacity for solar, purchase additional AI compute infrastructure, and build a semiconductor fab.”
Expanding Factory Footprint
Musk outlined long-term vehicle production targets, stating Tesla is “aiming for 5 million vehicles a year by approximately 2030.” Musk said the company is “laying the groundwork for a lot more manufacturing capacity” to achieve this volume.
Part of this infrastructure includes the Austin-based Terafab project. Musk stated that the research fab is “progressing quickly” and that Tesla will “begin commissioning machinery in the first half of next year.”
Taneja noted that expanding factory operations remains a complex endeavor. “While we are actively working to increase production, it does take some time to get every aspect dialed in from supply chain to manufacturing to delivery logistics,” Taneja said.
Despite the operational hurdles, Taneja emphasized that this investment strategy “will position the company for the next era of growth.”
How Has TSLA Performed in 2026?
The stock was 5.32% lower in premarket trading on Thursday. It declined by 12.68% over the last year, up 14.06% year-to-date, and up 2.98% over the last month. The stock closed up 3.41% at $386.47 on Wednesday.
Benzinga’s Edge Stock Rankings indicate that TSLA maintains a positive price trend in the short and medium terms but a negative trend in the long term, with a poor value score.
