MTR Expresses Profound Sorrow Over the Passing of Mr Tung Chee Hwa,
Former Vice-Chairman of CPPCC National Committee and
the First Chief Executive of HKSAR
MTR Corporation is deeply grieved by the passing of Mr Tung Chee Hwa, former Vice-
Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative
Conference (CPPCC) and the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region (HKSAR).
“Mr Tung dedicated his life to serving the country and Hong Kong, making significant
contributions to national development and Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability.
With a lifelong commitment to society, he fully recognised the importance of robust railway
and transport infrastructure to a city’s long-term development,” said Dr Jacob Kam,
Chairman of MTR Corporation.
“During his tenure as Chief Executive, Mr Tung attached great importance to Hong Kong’s
long-term transport planning and infrastructure development. He actively promoted a
public transport network with railways as its backbone and officiated at the commissioning
ceremonies of key railway projects, including the Airport Express and the Tseung Kwan O Line,
leveraging railway development to foster the growth of communities along the railway
network and the wider economy. Because of his forward-looking vision and leadership,
Hong Kong continued to build an efficient, convenient and sustainable public transport
system, contributing to the city’s economic prosperity,” added Ms Jeny Yeung, Chief
Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.
