Failed payments result in lost fees and extra labor. A more concerning problem often never surfaces: transactions duplicating, steps going missing, decisions made on incomplete data. By the time those failures show up, it’s usually in a customer complaint, a failed settlement, or a regulatory inquiry.
A leading European investment bank experienced that situation. The institution’s loan validation process, a critical component of its Corporate and Investment Banking operations, with millions of euros moving through it daily, was running with no real-time visibility into what was happening inside it.
Business observability addresses this challenge by connecting technical telemetry to business processes in real time, before failures become crises.
Business observability of loan validation in investment banking
The first step for the investment bank was getting clarity on what the process was supposed to do: where the validation steps were, where errors could occur, and what a failure would look like downstream. That alignment with both business stakeholders and IT made the rest possible.
From there, the team mapped the data and technologies that drove decisions at each step. The process spanned two Appian applications, communicating via API Connect and Kafka — a technology stack common in enterprise banking but notoriously difficult to observe end-to-end. With OneAgent deployed, they extracted key business data directly from HTTP request payloads, with no code changes required. In scenarios where direct capture wasn’t possible, a Kafka Sink Connector provided an alternative path. The raw data then moved through OpenPipeline for processing and normalization, making it usable for monitoring and analysis.
Once they had the data, they gained end-to-end visibility through Dynatrace Business Flow. They mapped technical signals to business steps, tracked key metrics in real time, and put alerting in place so the team could act before issues reached customers, hit SLAs, or created compliance exposure.
What they found when that visibility came online is what this approach is actually about. Issues that had been invisible — duplicated operations, transaction errors, missing processes — became visible, attributable, and fixable before they escalated into revenue leakage or regulatory risk.
Why business observability matters beyond one bank
The loan validation case is a specific example of a broader pattern. Financial institutions operate across legacy systems, cloud-native applications, and complex workflows. There is often a large gap between what technology reports and what the business needs to know.
Business observability bridges that gap. It connects technical telemetry to business outcomes with real-time monitoring tied to the processes that carry financial and regulatory risk. For financial services specifically, that means the ability to detect and resolve issues before customers feel them, support compliance with DORA, PSD2, and GDPR with evidence rather than assertion, and reduce the operational drag of manual investigation when something goes wrong.
From loan validations and credit risk assessment to payment processing, fraud detection, and regulatory compliance, business observability provides actionable insights that support resilience, performance, and customer trust. Whether improving STP in corporate banking or strengthening digital onboarding in retail banking, the goal is the same: connect what’s happening in technology to what’s happening in the business before customers, regulators, or the market feel the impact.
Getting started
With a structured approach, financial institutions can gain real-time insights, reduce operational risks, and improve customer experiences. In practice, that can mean uncovering issues teams weren’t aware of—such as duplicated operations, transaction errors, and missing processes that lead to revenue leakage—and addressing them before they escalate.
