Speaker 2: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Speaker 1: We are going to check in on some stocks on the move right now. And Christina Kino is here with us. She is our managing editor for MarketsLive. Christine, what are you looking at? Let's start with Corey Scarlett. We got to start there.
Speaker 4: I mean, that stock, ticker CRWV, and it is down for a fourth straight day, is currently trading down 7.7% after a 15% plunge yesterday. And it's been a tumultuous 24 hours or so for Corweave. So yesterday, its bonds plummeted. Plunged to levels that typically indicate distress. And then we got a hold of a memo sent by the CEO, Mike Entrotter, saying that the market is acting, quote, irrationally in response to that.
Speaker 1: And then prior to.
Speaker 4: Actually all this price action, we also heard from their co-founder, Brandon McBee, in a Financial Times interview that was published on Wednesday. saying that the company's goal was to keep winning investment-grade ratings for its debt, which would provide access to, quote, all the money in the world. And so it's been, seems like it's just been a perfect storm in the past 24.
Speaker 1: To 48 hours for CoreWeave here.
Speaker 4: And that's taking a toll on the stock, again, down for the fourth straight day in a row.
Speaker 1: In the words of Elon Musk, yikes.
Speaker 3: Yeah, can you make the distinction between CoreWeave, which has lots of debt and no free cash flow, and the others who have lots of free cash flow and they can borrow. Yes, exactly.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: I mean, and that is the problem with Corey specifically, right?
Speaker 4: Like it wasn't particularly well-rated.
Speaker 1: Coming into this. And then we had the AI financing boom.
Speaker 4: And for a while, it felt like anyone who's selling AI debt is going to get favorable terms. And that was the case, particularly in the summer. But now it seems like we're getting to more toppy levels when it comes to both debt and also just the cost of that debt. And now markets seem to be making a distinction between those that actually have the balance sheet to back that debt and those that arguably do not include CoreWave.
Speaker 2: And that's look, it looks like it's dragging down even Dell.
Speaker 1: It's down 10, nearly 11%. Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4: So I mean, like what we've seen starting in CoreWave just seems like it's kind of brought into just risk aversion and primarily led by anything related to the AI trade. So Dell in particular, it's a chip maker, right? It's currently those shares down more than 8% now. So extending some of those opening declines Check it out. It's sticker D-E-L-L. And it's not even a Dell-related story. I think overnight it's primarily being driven down along with other chip makers because we did hear from Anthropic. which is, of course, a key driver of all this demand for chips and everything in the AI supply chain. But, you know, they told prospective investors, look, its third quarter revenue hit $ 16. 8 billion. It's impressive when you compare it to a year earlier, but is slower.
Speaker 1: From the previous quarter.
Speaker 4: And very interesting timing as well, because they are expected to start marketing their IPO in early November. And so the question is, is the valuation, which is expected to be in the ballpark of $ 1. 8 trillion to $ 2 trillion.
Speaker 1: Is it going to be worth it? And what does it mean for.
Speaker 4: All the companies, including Dell, in that supply chain if there are doubts that start to grow over this valuation and how it's going to perform post-IPO?
Speaker 1: Yeah, the questions raise more questions, as it turns out.
Speaker 2: All right, let's get to a bank.
Speaker 1: Let's get to a bank.
Speaker 4: Yes, BNY Mellon, ticker BNY, reporting earlier today. Those shares actually, though, down a little bit, 1.2%. I mean, look, it was a good set of results, right? Third quarter adjusted EPS, beating estimates. And then their CEO, Robin Vins, saying that sales... and pipelines remain healthy. Our moving intelligence analysts, though, are noting that, yes, growth extending has been helped by sales, but now the pace of that growth may settle moving forward. And another analyst, KBW's David Conrad, pointing out that servicing fees were the star of the quarter for the third quarter, but a lot of that was tied to the resilience of equity markets. As we're seeing today, they're not looking so resilient. So moving forward, What is that picture going to look like? Probably weighing on BNY's shares today as a result.
