Speaker 1: Let's take a look at some stocks on the move today. I'm Tim Stanovick, along with Carol Master. Back with us, Bloomberg News U.S. equities reporter, Matthew Griffin. Hey, Matthew.
Speaker 2: Hey, Tim. How's it going?
Speaker 1: Good, good. What stocks did you bring us today?
Speaker 2: Well, I've been watching Chipotle all day. That's ticker CMG. It's been extending losses now down almost 5% after Starbucks said they are not buying the Mexican fast casual chain Of course, that stock had rallied last week on this FT report that Starbucks had talked to advisors about a potential deal to do just that. Now we're seeing a bit of the deal premium taken out of the stock and investor attention returned to a somewhat dismal story there. I mean, the shares are now down 19% this year again.
Speaker 1: Can anyone give me a story about why this deal would make sense?
Speaker 3: To food companies? Somebody, a CEO who knows Chipotle like no other so that if you wanted to create synergies and cut costs that maybe you could figure it out.
Speaker 1: But from a brand identity perspective, like Chipotle is not recognized as a quote unquote third place where you go and gather as a community, where you do your homework.
Speaker 3: Chipbox, call the company Chipbox.
Speaker 1: It just, it just, I'm sorry, Matt. It's just like, I saw this headline last week. I was like, this makes, apart from the relationship between like, you know, Brian Nickel and Scott Boatwright.
Speaker 3: Beans, beans and coffee, beans and burritos. I don't know. I know.
Speaker 1: I don't get it.
Speaker 3: I don't get it either.
Speaker 1: Do any analysts get it?
Speaker 2: Analysts? Well, they thought it might make sense for Chipotle for exactly that reason. Brian Nickel knows the company. He could engineer a turnaround on all the metrics they're lagging on.
Speaker 1: He's busy engineering a turnaround at Starbucks.
Speaker 2: Well, that's the exact thing.
Speaker 3: That's the big reason why.
Speaker 2: Analysts were very concerned about what this would mean for Starbucks, whether they could focus on two turnarounds at once, one that is... going well at starbucks but is in kind of the early days it's kind of.
Speaker 3: Like you have one toddler and you're like ah let's just get pregnant and have another one we're in the diapers we're in the non-sleeping let's just like roll it all in okay that feels about right i get it right and then they're all of a sudden they're both like five or six and they're off to kindergarten in first grade and you're like wow.
Speaker 1: Okay that's their problem but it's not because when school's over it's your problem that's.
Speaker 2: True well and we're seeing a bit of relief in starbucks today that's ticker sbux up about a percent and a half Yeah.
Speaker 1: Matthew's like, can we talk about the next stock?
Speaker 3: All right, let's go to Bristol, Bristol Myers, BMY.
Speaker 2: Yes, that stock is down almost 3% after some, also you want to talk about confusing situations, some hard to parse data from a trial of a drug for a lung disease. That's idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. And the interesting thing here is patients on a smaller dose showed statistically significant improvement. Patients on a larger dose showed did not improve. It's something that analysts at RBC say is confounding. It also really matters for this drug because they say what was supposed to set this apart from competitors was more efficiency, basically meaning a higher dose, you treat the disease better. They also say, you know, this is broadly positive, these results, but we just have to kind of pick apart what that means, and it's not clear yet there.
Speaker 3: Sounds like you had to do a little bit more research, right? The lower dose versus the higher dose. All right, so we're keeping an eye on that, and that stock's down about two, almost 3% in today's session.
Speaker 2: Salesforce. Yeah, so that's ticker CRM up about a percent and a half after a double upgrade at Bank of America, and they're pointing to AI. Not something we always hear for software names, you know, AI as a tailwind. It's actually something they say in that note. The firm says they were pretty worried about AI disruption for Salesforce, but they've come around on this. Now they think that big companies are not going to be willing to just ditch platforms that have all their data, all their workflows, their compliance tools. And now they say Salesforce, it can continue selling those. It can sell AI tools like CloudForce, AgentForce, and maybe actually even capture more value. So they went all the way from a sell equivalent rating to a buy, and that is lifting the stock today.
Speaker 3: There you have it. So that's interesting that it's actually giving it a little bit of a kick to the upside.
Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of questions about a saspocalypse.
Speaker 2: Stock's still down year to date. Remember, that's all we were talking about for a while.
Speaker 3: Not so much as of late.
