Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, podcasts, radio, news. The Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Speaker 2: Let's get a look at some stocks on the move today. I'm Nora Melinda with Stacey Vanik-Smith, and we're joined by Matthew Griffin, Bloomberg Equities Reporter.
Speaker 3: Matthew, what are you.
Speaker 2: Keeping an eye on right now in this market?
Speaker 3: Well, Nora, we have got to start with Chipotle. That's ticker CMG. Down about 4% after Starbucks said they are not buying the Mexican fast casual chain. So that, of course, comes after the Financial Times report last week. that Starbucks had talked to advisors about a potential transaction doing just that. We're sort of seeing the deal premium come out of Chipotle today. And then Starbucks, that's ticker SBUX, is up about a percent and a half. There had been some analyst concerns about about, you know, maybe this is good on the Chipotle side that's reuniting Brian Nickel with his old company, but would they, you know, for Starbucks really be able to integrate a company of that size?
Speaker 2: And I think it's, go ahead.
Speaker 1: No, no.
Speaker 2: I was like, I really was very excited about the coffee and burrito prospect, but it seems like it's not to be. I know. It's so interesting, especially when we were thinking that this is something that could happen, apparently not being the case. But I mean, I'm also looking at shares of Chipotle. It's been a bit pressured this year. It's down about 18 percent on a year to date basis.
Speaker 1: Yes.
Speaker 3: And there was conversation about, you know, you could get an attractive deal premium here. And again, maybe Brian Nickel would be able to come back to his company, engineer a turnaround in things like same store sales. But that might take focus off a turnaround on exactly those metrics at Starbucks.
Speaker 2: Which is so interesting. Shares of Chipotle currently down by about 4% right now as we speak. Starbucks a little bit higher by about 1.5%. All right, what else are you looking at this morning?
Speaker 3: Well, Stacey, I've been looking at Adobe in the software space. That stock ticker ADBE is down about a percent after a double downgrade at Wells Fargo. So that's to underweight from overweight. They point to their third quarter results. They call them fairly muted. And then in a big picture sense, they say that's a sign that more meaningful cracks are starting to show up in the growth profile for this company. So that's another... Vote of lack of confidence in this company. Another slight hit to the stock before Anil Chakravarty takes over as CEO in December. His appointment caused some investor concern. A lot of people were looking for an outside appointment. A lot of people are worried, investors, about AI and this company, their future, whether they'll be disrupted. So that stock now is down more than 31% on a year-to-date basis.
Speaker 2: Oof. That's not good.
Speaker 3: No, and a lot of these software names have clawed back from some of these what we would call SaaSpocalypse declines, but Adobe really hasn't yet.
Speaker 2: Really struggling there. And there's one last name you're looking at.
Speaker 3: Yes, another software name, kind of the opposite story today. That's Salesforce, ticker CRM. They are up about 2.5% after a double upgrade. That's at Bank of America. And that firm is pointing to AI as a tailwind for Salesforce, which is, of course, also a software provider. They say they used to be pretty worried about disruption here, but now they think that large companies probably just aren't going to replace platforms that house their data, their workflows, compliance platforms, and that Salesforce could actually capture more value as a result. Wow.
Speaker 2: And the stock also lower, near today at least, by about 11%. But today you're seeing it to the upside.
Speaker 3: They're one of the ones that, yes, still down, but they have made up a lot of ground compared to where they were in, say, February or March of this year.
Speaker 2: So clearly a bit of a different story than the likes of Adobe that you were just chatting about.
Speaker 3: Yes, and you actually see that in the reaction to earnings reports and outlooks. Salesforce gave an outlook in August that sent that stock soaring, and then Adobe got punished by investors when they reported last month. So there's really different sentiment about these names and investors. It seems like they're being a little bit more selective with what they think about software stocks than, again, in February where they were just selling everything.
