Speaker 1: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Speaker 3: Let's take a look at some stocks on the move today. We're looking at declines in the S & P and the Nasdaq, and that's kind of the theme for the week as well. Let's check in with our Bloomberg News equities reporter, Avalon Purnell. Avalon, what are you looking at?
Speaker 4: We have to start off with Alcoa. That's ticker AA. It's currently jumping nearly 9.5 percent, most intraday since May. And that's after the aluminum producer reported profit for the third quarter that generally surpassed Wall Street's expectations, B. Riley noting that improving production costs and also higher aluminum prices are contributing to their overall solid earnings report.
Speaker 2: Yeah, that used to be the company that always kicked off earnings season. I don't know why they don't do that. And I always maintain that that's a template for all the data centers because Alcoa, to make aluminum, you have to zap the ore with just unbelievable amounts of electricity. So the way they do it, you know, they have built dams and stuff, hydroelectric dams. That's how much energy they have to use.
Speaker 3: I forgot about this. John Tucker is an expert in aluminum. Like every earnings season, he like- He's an expert on a lot of things. Yes, this is true. But he like tells us to do that.
Speaker 2: Pretend to be.
Speaker 3: Exactly.
Speaker 2: All right, what else is going on, Evelyn?
Speaker 4: Birkenstock, that's ticker B-I-R-K, currently falling about 3.6% most intraday in over a month. And that's after Williams downgraded the shoemaker to sell from hold. That analyst says that he would not be surprised if the company will not be able to meet its 2028 fiscal year targets. These points to increasing promotional activity, especially in Europe. And also key accounts in the Americas trimming their existing order books. So I'm going to be curious to see what this looks like for Birkenstock moving forward.
Speaker 3: Okay. When you said Birkenstock, Paul just said nope. Right as I was saying, I think I have like 15 pairs of Birkenstocks at home.
Speaker 2: And the people who walk around these homebays here at Bloomberg, the engineer, computer types, lots of Birkenstocks.
Speaker 3: Oh, well, the engineer computer types like they can do whatever they want here. I mean, I've seen them walking around in shorts.
Speaker 2: He always stops them and say, why? What are you wearing? We're not at the beach. You're in the office.
Speaker 1: I love that. Nope.
Speaker 2: Nope.
Speaker 3: All right.
Speaker 2: One more.
Speaker 3: Yes.
Speaker 1: J.B. Hunt.
Speaker 4: That's ticker J.B.H.T. currently slipping about one point four percent. That's after the trucking firm reported operating ratio for the third quarter. That was a bit higher than expected. This indicator shows that cost pressures from higher diesel prices and also hiring continue to stick around for this company. JP Morgan predicting that the company's shares are going to modestly underperform today as costs remain stickier than expected into the fourth quarter. Morgan Stanley also noting that, you know, it sounds like while management sounds pretty hopeful, full recovery will likely take a lot of time and require patience from the market.
