Speaker 1: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Speaker 3: Stephen, thank you. Let's have a look at some of the stocks on the move today in Europe. I'm Caroline Hepka with Stephen Cowell. We're joined by Bloomberg reporter Josh Gaunt-Warner. Josh, good morning. First up, let's talk about Ericsson rising after its third quarter earnings were a beat.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 2: So, the Swedish company is rallying this morning. It's actually having its best day since January. It's rallying over 10% and it's the top performer in the Stock 600. It was following a very strong beat in the latest quarter. It's been driven by solid demand for its mobile network equipment in core markets and by projects in countries such as Japan and India. And essentially, it's being seen as a solid start for the new CEO, Per Narvinga. He's a company veteran who only formally took over at the helm of the company this month. And he's essentially been tasked with reviving the business, which has struggled with sluggish demand for 5G equipment in recent years. Really strong margins are also helping this morning, although the company has flagged that component costs will pressure profitability next year. It's managing to mitigate this for now, and it says it plans to pass on these higher costs to customers when contracts end. But it's clearly going to see some profitability being hit in the meantime. And this is likely to be a key focus of the call with management today. But overall, today's update is aiding a stock that has been quite under pressure recently. Ericsson has been underperforming the broader market for about three or four months now.
Speaker 4: Yeah, indeed. I spoke to the CEO of Ericsson on TV this morning. And that fact of, I suppose, their margins coming in much stronger than had been expected. But as you say, questions about how much the price rises are going to be and their margins of being able to renegotiate any of their contracts, given the duration of them, something that's a focus for markets as well. Let's go to the drinks company Pernod Ricard next, seeing some cheer after its latest numbers out today.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 2: So, the French company, you know, makes brands such as Absolute Vodka and Jameson Whiskey is up about 3% today. Analysts have described its latest update as encouraging. Now, things are still tough. Sales were down in most markets. But overall, organic growth declined less than feared. India was a particular bright spot where we saw really strong growth. And analysts were encouraged by the commentary on tougher conditions in the U.S.
Speaker 4: And China.
Speaker 2: Now, what we're seeing here, Jefferies are saying that the results are good enough considering this should be the trough quarter for the company, which is potentially signaling the end of the downgrade cycle and leading to better times for the business going forward. The strength in India is also quite poignant considering it's considering an IPO of its India unit, which is seen as a catalyst going forward. But overall, the green shoots today are being taken well, and it's also helping narrow the underperformance gap against peers such as Diageo this year.
Speaker 3: Okay. So, that's on the drinks business. What about Donelm, the home furnishings company, lifting the curtain on some positive results?
Speaker 1: It is.
Speaker 2: And curtains have actually been one of the drivers of its results today. The stock is up over 5%. It's one of the best performers in the UK. And the solid message that's been delivered here is that there's been a big acceleration in sales growth today.
Speaker 1: Through the latest quarter. So, 1Q sales were.
Speaker 2: Up just 1.1%, but it actually exited the quarter at around 4% growth in the final weeks of the period. Barclays said the company made a slow start to the year, mostly because of that hot weather, but it should see growth accelerate in the second half. Yeah, and just to say that its made-to-measure curtains are one of the drivers there.
