Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, podcasts, radio, news.
Speaker 2: The Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Speaker 1: Let's take a look at some stocks on the move today. I'm Nathan Hager, joined by Bloomberg's Chloe Mellie on a morning after some pretty big earnings news. Let's start off with Tesla. Was the bar just too high after what we saw from SpaceX the day before yesterday. Good morning.
Speaker 3: Yes, good morning, Nathan. All eyes, as you said, are very much on Tesla after SpaceX yesterday. And of course, all of this talk around a potential merger. So that's still very relevant, still on investors' minds. But let's look at the earnings themselves, because there we do have two very different stories. We had those great results from SpaceX, and it's not so much the case for Tesla, with the main source of disappointment being the cut to spending plan. So CapEx is a really important metric for the company. And there was a cut to it, and that's now making investors doubt this sort of transformation that's happening at the moment from just electric vehicles into also AI and robotics. And the problem is that this shift is seen as a really key justification for this merger with SpaceX in the first place. So this set of results could maybe temper some of that optimism around this eventual deal.
Speaker 1: And we also got, of course, results from Meta Platforms. I guess they boosted their spending forecast, but the stock's down. What's going on?
Speaker 3: Yeah, the meta is interesting to watch as well. As you said, shares have struggled for direction a little bit after results and are down right now. So we've got actually some solid earnings, got the company beating expectations on quite a lot of metrics. And as you mentioned, this raised a CapEx guidance. And analysts also seem to be very excited about the launch of Muse, which is really seen as an investment in AI really paying off for the company. But that's not maybe quite enough to revive this broader AI trade. And we need to wait probably until we get all the other hyperscalers coming next week to get a read on this massive spending on AI and the sustainability of that really.
Speaker 1: Now, this morning, we got earnings from Spotify. Those seem to be received quite a lot better, at least for this morning.
Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely.
Speaker 3: Well, we saw those shares dipping originally and then reversing losses. The thing for Spotify is that it keeps adding more users, but then revenue is still slightly lower than expected. So the problem is that it has more free users than paying subscribers, but then it's struggling to make the ad business a really lucrative part of its business model. And so investors were at first a little bit unsure about what to make of this. But in terms of what analysts are saying, Bloomberg Intelligence did say that the results create a very solid setup going into next year. And there's a lot coming down the pipeline for that company. Audiobooks coming to more markets, big podcast contracts as well being renewed. And then there's an AI-powered remixing tool letting people customize songs that is also coming soon.
Speaker 1: And finally, we got earnings this morning and some big news about a major fighter jet deal for Lockheed Martin.
Speaker 3: Yes, so Lockheed Martin getting this major fighter jet deal and also raising guidance because of this rising defense spending. Of course, this has been a theme for a while. We're seeing all those geopolitical tensions, fueling demand for missiles, for air defense systems, you know, wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, making governments all over the world spend increasing amounts on the military. And now we're seeing those spending commitments announced, you know, a while ago really translate into actual orders. And we've seen that across that sector with Northrop Grumman and Thales in Europe as well, also raising guidance for the city.
