Amkor Technology: AI Tailwinds Support Earnings as Capex Cycle Accelerates
Amkor continues to benefit from AI/HPC tailwinds, improving utilization, and deepening strategic customer partnerships…
不做 Amkor Technology(AMKR.US)
不做 英伟达(NVDA.US)
不做 台积电(TSM.US)

Amkor continues to benefit from AI/HPC tailwinds, improving utilization,
and deepening strategic customer partnerships as it enters a heavy
investment cycle. The quarter reinforced the credit-positive demand backdrop for
Advanced Packaging, with record revenue in Computing and Automotive/
Industrial, strategic agreements with TSMC and NVIDIA, and Phase I of Arizona
now described as fully committed. However, the story remains capital intensive:
management reiterated $2.5–$3.0bn of 2026 capex, mostly tied to facilities
expansion, with Arizona ramp costs likely to weigh on margins in 2027/2028.
• 2Q26 results were strong. AMKR posted 2Q26 revenue of $1.898bn, up 13% q/q and 26% y/y, above the high end of guidance and beating the consensus
forecast of $1.818bn. Growth was broad-based, with record Computing and
Automotive/Industrial revenue. Communications increased 6% q/q, driven by
double-digit growth in the iOS ecosystem, though Android declined 20% due
to memory supply dynamics. Computing was up 20% q/q on broad data center
demand, while Automotive/Industrial grew 17% q/q on ADAS strength and
Consumer increased 15% q/q on IoT demand. Gross margin expanded to 16.8%, up 260bps q/q and 480bps y/y, helped by higher utilization and
favorable mix. EBITDA was $400mn, up 40% q/q and 54% y/y, beating the
Street estimate of $337mn. EPS of $0.70 more than tripled y/y and was higher
than the $.0.49 analysts were looking for.
• Guidance was better on margins than on seasonal revenue
composition. Management guided 3Q26 revenue to $1.95–$2.05bn, implying
~5% q/q growth at the midpoint. That fell a bit short of the consensus view of
$2.11bn, however. Still, profitability improved as gross margin is expected to reach 18.5–19.5%, driven primarily by a mix shift toward Computing and
Advanced Packaging, rather than utilization alone. The revenue mix is less
typical seasonally: Communications is expected to decline high-single digits
q/q despite the usual smartphone build season, while Computing is expected
to grow nearly 30% q/q on AI data center demand and the HDFO CPU ramp.
Automotive/Industrial should grow mid-single digits, and Consumer should
grow mid-teens.
• AI and Advanced Packaging are increasingly central to the credit
story. Management highlighted a 10-year Advanced Packaging agreement with TSMC to support the U.S. semiconductor supply chain and a multi-year
NVIDIA partnership for Advanced Packaging and test tied to next-generation
AI infrastructure. These agreements improve long-term visibility, support
utilization, and validate AMKR’s planned Arizona capacity. The NVIDIA
arrangement also includes a $1.5bn customer prepayment expected to be received in 2027 and returned through services over roughly five to 10 years,
which should help reduce funding pressure during the heaviest phase of the
investment cycle. We caution investors that long-term contracts in the
semiconductor space have historically unwound when cycles turn south.
• Communications is the main near-term soft spot. Management expects 3Q
Communications revenue to decline in the high-single digits q/q due to three factors: the SiP migration from Korea to Vietnam, ongoing memory constraints, and build-pattern changes. Roughly half of the atypical seasonal
weakness appears tied to market factors and half to the internal SiP transition.
