Cadence Design Systems Inc: Agentic Opportunity to the Fore
Beat-and-raise reinforces durable EDA/IP momentum; agentic AI and Intel broaden the medium-term growth setup. Cadence delivered another high-quality print, with record backlog, stronger IP growth, continued hardware demand and early traction in agentic EDA. Management again raised FY26 guidance, taking revenue growth to c.19% y/y at the midpoint ($6.3bn) and non-GAAP EPS to $8.10. The call also helped address investor concerns that open-source EDA or LLM-based workflows could structurally pressure high-end EDA demand. Instead, management framed AI agents as usage accelerators and workflow extensions, with incremental monetisation potential over time. Competitive positioning also appears to be improving, most visibly through the expanded Intel engagement. While H2 margins flatten despite higher revenue as Cadence invests behind Intel, Hexagon integration and product expansion, the broader message remains clear: CDNS continues to compound above peers across core EDA, IP and hardware, with a more credible path to sustained outperformance into FY27.
Agentic EDA increasingly looks like an additive, durable growth vector rather than a near-term hype cycle. Management described agentic AI as a demand accelerator and long-term TAM expansion opportunity, while positioning AuraStack as evidence that Cadence now has agentic capability across PCB, advanced packaging and the broader design flow. Adoption remains early but tangible:
Agentic Opportunity to the Fore
Beat-and-raise, record backlog and agentic EDA as an additive growth vector. CDNS also has Intel 14A as a strategic incremental win with H2 margin investment framing FY27 upside potential. We stay Overweight and raise our price target to $400 (from $370).
Key Takeaways
CDNS delivered another beat-and-raise, with FY26 revenue growth now guided to c.19% y/y and EPS to $8.10.
Record $8.1bn backlog reinforces visibility and supports the case for sustained above-peer compounding into FY27.
Agentic EDA is emerging as an additive growth vector, with early monetised deployments and broader usage uplift across the core EDA stack.
The expanded Intel 14A engagement is strategically important, fully incremental and strengthens Cadence’s positioning at leading-edge customers.
H2 margin flattening reflects targeted investment rather than demand weakness, with scope for profitability upside if momentum persists.
ChipStack has more than 20 customer engagements, including Nvidia, with some deployments already in production and monetised. Similar traction was cited for other agents, including ViraStack. Importantly, Cadence sees monetisation coming both from new agentic workflow products and higher usage of the underlying EDA stack. Guidance does not assume a sudden step-function in adoption, which keeps near-term expectations grounded, but the strategic direction is constructive. The bigger impact likely builds into FY27 rather than H2 FY26, though early customer engagement appears stronger than expected.
Intel engagement is strategically important and appears fully incremental. Cadence expanded its Intel relationship through a multi-year collaboration focused on enabling Intel 14A, using Cadence design IP and agentic AI-based EDA to optimise flows for next-generation HPC and mobile designs. Management described the agreement as a meaningful growth driver over the next several years and stated that it is 100% incremental to existing Intel contracts. The breadth of the engagement is the key point: it spans DTCO, agentic EDA solutions and Cadence IP, extending beyond 14A into future Intel Foundry roadmaps and multiple Intel product groups. For CDNS, this is a notable competitive win given Intel has historically been a difficult account to penetrate at scale. It also supports the view that Cadence’s expanding product breadth is translating into stronger strategic relevance at leading-edge customers.
Raised FY26 guide leaves room for further upside if momentum persists. FY26 guidance now implies revenue of $6.30bn, or c.19% y/y growth at the midpoint, non-GAAP operating margin of 44.25%, non-GAAP EPS of $8.10 and operating cash flow of c.$2.0bn. Q3 guidance was set at $1.595bn–$1.625bn of revenue, 43.5%–44.5% non-GAAP operating margin and $2.01–$2.07 non-GAAP EPS. Backlog exited Q2 at a record $8.1bn, reinforcing revenue visibility. The CFO noted that H2 margins should be slightly below H1 as Cadence absorbs targeted investments tied to Intel, Hexagon integration and product expansion, but framed these investments as supportive of improved profitability in FY27. Beat-and-raise execution has become increasingly repeatable for CDNS. If broad-based demand continues, particularly in agentic EDA and IP, another upward revision later in the year remains plausible.
We are Overweight CDNS and lift our PT to $400. We make changes to our estimates in line with the new guide and momentum into FY27. We now see sales/EPS of $6.32bn/$8.3 for FY26 and $7.37bn/$9.8 for FY27 (up from $6.23bn/$7.95 and $7.2bn/$9.71 respectively). We stay Overweight and raise our price target to $400 as we apply an upcycle P/E multiple of 41x to our higher FY27 EPSe ($9.71), a slight discount to our previous multiple of 45x as we now roll forward a year, but still within the 40-50x historical P/E range. We continue to see solid margin/earnings growth next year on deal integration, early agentic monetisation and physical AI momentum. The company has a firm base in systems analysis and simulation work in the chip design flow, deep customer relationships, a leading position in analog and mixed-signal design, and a solid balance sheet, and should enjoy strong structural growth with its agentic tools and broadening relationships at foundries. We lift our bull case valuation to $600 as in this scenario we think Cadence may see better-than-modelled gains as design range and complexity expands at a faster pace than expected. This could see Cadence reach $12+ EPS
