Strong 2Q Beat & Raised Outlook; Backlog Grows ~$9.4bn Sequentially
CITI'S TAKE
CAT reported 2Q26 adj. EPS of $8.17, above Citi/FactSet Consensus of $6.01/$6.22. CAT did book $392mn of IEEPA tariff recoveries in the quarter, which contributed 65c to the beat. CAT also noted that tariff costs (excl. IEEPA recoveries) were ~$400mn in 2Q, lower than expectations of ~$700mn, and revised down its full-year tariff outlook to $2.2bn from $2.2-2.4bn. MP&E sales of ~$19.6bn came in ~9% above our estimate, driven by CI and RI, and adj. op margin of 20% (excl. tariff recoveries) was ~90-bps above our model. CAT's backlog grew by ~$9.4bn sequentially (up ~15%), which the company noted reflects broadening momentum across all three segments. Retail sales were +DD% across all segments in the quarter, and CAT raised its 2026 top-line expectations to mid-to-high teens growth vs LDD growth prior. We would anticipate CAT shares to react positively to the 2Q beat, raised outlook & healthy backlog growth.
Segment Results
— CI sales came in at ~$8.3bn (up ~35% y/y), above our ~$7.2bn estimate, while CI op margin of 23.3% was ~230-bps above our model. RI sales came in at ~$4.6bn (up ~20% y/y), above our ~$4bn estimate, while RI op margin of 14.9% was ~190-bps above our model. P&E sales came in at ~$8.2bn (up ~17% y/y), relatively in-line with our ~$8.2bn estimate, while P&E op margin of 24.6% was ~210-bps above our model. Finco op profit of $328mn was above our $281mn estimate.
Updated Guidance Commentary
— CAT revised up its 2026 sales and revenues expectations, now anticipating growth in the mid-to-high teens vs expectations for low-double-digit growth prior. CAT continues to expect 2026 full-year adjusted operating profit margin near the bottom of the target range, excluding IEEPA tariff recoveries. CAT now anticipates 2026 tariff costs around $2.2bn, excluding IEEPA tariff recoveries, vs prior expectations for 2026 tariff costs in the range of $2.2-2.4bn. CAT's implied tariff costs in 2H26 imply an annualized run-rate of ~$2.4bn by our math. CAT also now expects 2026 full-year MP&E free cash flow in the top half of the annual target range. In 3Q, CAT expects strong sales & revenue growth y/y, higher adj. operating profit margin y/y, and tariff costs similar to 3Q25.
Backlog/Inventories/Retail Sales
— CAT's backlog grew ~$9.4bn sequentially (up ~15% sequentially and ~92% y/y) to $72.1bn, implying a b:b of 1.5x in the quarter. CI dealer inventories increased by $400mn in the quarter. Retail sales were up healthily in every region in CI.
Implications
— We would anticipate CAT shares to react positively to the 2Q beat, raised outlook & healthy backlog growth
