- 映射模式: macro_context

Oil price tumbles as Iran and US pause strikes over Strait of Hormuz

Oil prices fall as Iran and US pause strikes over Strait of Hormuz tensions
Global oil prices fell by more than 5 per cent as the US and Iran paused tit-for-tat strikes after weeks of escalating violence over the Strait of Hormuz.
The cost of a barrel of Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell to $91.87 a barrel in opening trades in Asia as talks between mediators continued after two weeks of hostilities that had driven oil up past $100.
The US military has not reported any air strikes against Iran since launching attacks overnight on Thursday, while Iranian forces have not mounted any assaults on American bases in the region since Friday.
Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump was “giving the talks some space” before deciding whether to resume strikes. The US and Iran have both been vying for control of the strait, the narrow waterway through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas passed before the war.
The fall in oil, if sustained, will bring some relief to Trump barely 100 days out from midterm elections in which the Republican Party is battling to retain control of both houses of Congress.
Oil market analysts cautioned against pricing in further falls at a time when the strait remained essentially closed for business and rising tensions between Yemen’s Houthi militants and Saudi Arabia threatened to further impede shipments.
“Even if we have a headline-driven sell-off, we do not see traffic through Hormuz normalising anytime soon and now we have the added Red Sea problems,” said Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets.
“A [pause] in active fighting does not mean we have entered the ‘start your engines’ phase for two-way shipping traffic,” she added, in reference to Trump’s claim in June that global oil flows had been restored.
The impact of the conflict on petrol prices and other goods has weighed on the president’s favourability ratings.
An FT/Focaldata poll conducted at the end of June, before the recent escalation of the US and Iran’s attacks, found just 36 per cent of US voters surveyed approved of the job Trump was doing as president.
Petrol prices across the US are now averaging $4.11 per gallon, according to data from motor club AAA, up from less than $3 before the conflict began in late February.
The rise in petrol prices has driven inflation up to 4.1 per cent, more than double the US Federal Reserve’s 2 per cent goal.
Fed officials are set to meet in the coming days to discuss whether price pressures are strong enough to warrant the first rise in interest rates in three years.
US rate-setters on the Federal Open Market Committee have maintained the benchmark federal funds target at a 3.5-3.75 per cent range since the end of last year.
Bets on an FOMC rate rise as soon as Wednesday fell slightly to 36.3 per cent on Sunday evening, down from 37.4 per cent at the Friday close, according to data from CME Group.
“Although higher energy prices strengthen the case that the FOMC may eventually need to tighten policy further, we continue to expect the committee to remain on hold,” said Jonathan Millar, economist at Barclays.

Iran-Oman Talks Focused on Restarting Hormuz Shipping Traffic
URL: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-07-27/iran-oman-talks-focused-on-restarting-hormuz-shipping-traffic
Negotiators from Iran and Oman are trying to reach an agreement to restart shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to people familiar with the matter.

Iran and Oman, whose territories border the strait, are continuing discussions after their officials met in Tehran over the weekend, the people said, asking not to be identified talking about sensitive matters. A successful deal would then enable the Islamic Republic and the US to resume talks over ending their war, they said.

One proposal is to reopen the strait’s so-called middle passage, said two of the people. That has largely been avoided by ships since the start of the conflict in late February, with vessels taking either a northern route close to Iran’s shores or a southern one that passes near the Omani exclave of Musandam.

Omani negotiators are optimistic they’ll be able to make an announcement signaling progress in the next few days, the people said, adding there’s no guarantee that will happen.

US President Donald Trump told Axios on Monday that “deep talks” are taking place, though he didn’t specify if they are about the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions are mainly between Iran and Oman, Axios reported, with Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt and Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, also involved.

The middle passage likely contains sea mines placed by Iran, according to the people, and could have to be cleared before vessels use it on a regular basis. The UK, France and other European nations have said they can lead de-mining efforts, but only once it’s safe to do so.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is pushing his UK counterpart, Wes Streeting, to host a summit about protecting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz soon.

Oman’s foreign ministry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has become the biggest obstacle to peace talks between the US and Iran. An interim deal they signed in mid-June — meant to kickstart talks over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities — collapsed around three weeks ago. That was after Iran attacked tankers sailing through Hormuz, insisting they needed its permission first, and the US retaliated by launching daily airstrikes on Iranian territory.

Trump Pauses Strikes on Iran to Give Talks Another Chance European Nations Now Believe Some Hormuz Fees Are Inevitable Iran in Talks With Oman Over Permanent Hormuz Toll System

The two sides have paused their skirmishes since Friday, with Trump saying he wants to give diplomacy a chance.

Despite the lull, hardly any ships are moving through the Hormuz strait, at least with their locator devices turned on. That’s helped push up energy prices because of the waterway’s importance as a conduit for flows of oil and liquefied natural gas.

Since a ceasefire in April, some ships going through the strait obtained permission from Iran and took the northern route. Most others used the southern path, turning off their transponders to avoid detection by Iran and getting assistance from the US military.

Tehran has said since the war erupted — with US-Israeli strikes on Iran — that it will manage shipping in and around Hormuz, something the US and its allies have pushed back against. Iran is trying to get Oman to agree to a joint management system, which would probably include fees of some kind for vessels.

URL: https://www.cls.cn/detail/2438356
