  • 本轮生产环境未暴露stock_tools MCP命名空间,无法实际调用kb_search、supply_chain_lookup、event_study;已使用权威快照和Web核验,按fail-closed处理。

Bloomberg TV+ The Close transcript · 2026-08-24

[15:55:05 ET] And I think that if we get another really well behaved print, maybe they'll want to hold off.
[15:55:13 ET] September, but then it puts October in place, I mean, these prints have been over the 2% target for more than five years right.
[15:55:21 ET] We can't pretend we don't have an inflation problem right now we do well let's talk about that inflation problem because that's all anyone seems to want to talk about.
[15:55:29 ET] We look at the movements that we've seen in the bond market over the last few days, really the last few weeks, and now a lot of people looking for alternative.
[15:55:37 ET] if you will, we've seen a huge rally in gold and other sort of physical assets, bitcoin as well.
[15:55:45 ET] Recommend maybe allocating a little bit more to some of those areas given what's going on with yield dollar debasement.
[15:55:53 ET] If treasury does buy significant paper or rotate issue more bills and take more of the age securities out.
[15:56:01 ET] You know, that's a dollar weaker or trade we do have in our core portfolios allocations to real assets, that's REs, that's energy.
[15:56:09 ET] Producers that's gold, we happen to have uranium too that basket gets up very heartily this year more than 30%.
[15:56:17 ET] In our basket, we do recommend keeping hold of those types of assets also on the equity side non.
[15:56:25 ET] Equities we hold those in an unhedged way, and those have also beaten the S this year as well as last year.
[15:56:33 ET] There's been a continuation with the non US equities are there specific regions that you're in favor of Well the ones that have performed the best.
[15:56:41 ET] The Pacific region has done very well with Japan, Korea, and it's got some good diversification there.
[15:56:49 ET] We also have Europe and the other non US sectors not too many guests come on and talk about uranium, Mimi, got to say.
[15:56:57 ET] Yeah, well, that's a bold call, but no, I mean, we've heard from a few other people on that and just real quickly before we let you go, I am just curious.
[15:57:05 ET] The Japan angle too because there's been a lot of discussion about the competition now in terms of assets and returns and what investors are looking.
[15:57:13 ET] For you've already started to see that in the debt markets Japan versus U.S. and there's two big debt sales coming up next week in Japan.
[15:57:21 ET] A lot of people are focused on to think could it maybe exacerbate that yeah I mean, it's definitely it's certainly a theme right their currency there has.
[15:57:29 ET] You know,It's 40 or low or whatever the stat is, and they've made it clear that they would like to lift their currency, our treasury.
[15:57:37 ET] Has been helping them facilitate some activity in the market there It's I think Japan right now.
[15:57:45 ET] As in general is a bigger player in some of the macro themes that we're seeing All right always great to have you here on the programmi is senior client.
[15:57:53 ET] And head of the new york office over at genrus counting us down to the closing bells with the sp& 500 marginally in the red on the day despite.
[15:58:01 ET] In fact Emily, the majority of the stocks are in the green, just not the ones that we would normally sort of champion Yeah I mean that chip trade really.
[15:58:09 ET] F off as we just spoke about with Mimi and the nasdaq 100 also lower what's holding up, it's bitcoin roine.
[15:58:17 ET] to those closing bes a full breakdown of all of today's market action starts now.
[15:58:25 ET] Comprehensive cross platform coverage of the US market close starts right now.
[15:58:33 ET] Right now we are two minutes away from the end of the trading day, romaine bostic here with emily Grfael taking it through to that closing bell it's a global scast.
[15:58:41 ET] he joins us from the radio booth norra Mellinda in today for Carol masser welcome to our audiences across all of our bloomberg platforms.
[15:58:49 ET] Rio our partnership with you with stocks on the back foot to start a week, ti Sovk that historically would be little.
[15:58:57 ET] sn mean it's the last week August and theres a lot going on It is There is a lot going on. I mean, we got Friday and we got the Jacksonville Economic symymposium I hear Mike.
[15:59:05 ET] ready out there and I guess Tom and Lisa are going to be on their way pretty soon, but before that we have Nvidia reporting we'll get that.
[15:59:13 ET] On Wednesday, did I hear Emily talking about Bitcoin just now, I a little plug to.
[15:59:21 ET] Yeah another 1.8% today when you're up like 2% on a day when other risk assets are down well especially if you're Bitcoin and you've been in the 60s and you're getting.
[15:59:29 ET] 8 thank you Emily you know, you're talking about how busy this week is we've got, as you mentioned, Jacksonson hole at the end of the week and nvi and focused.
[15:59:37 ET] Also pE, we're going to be getting that on wenesday as we still continue to watch and monitor inflation and we know that PCE is the fed's preferred measure.
[15:59:45 ET] So maybe that might perhaps be a tee up for what ke wsh is going to say on friday to an extent kind.
[15:59:53 ET] Most people would be away and we should point out volume in the equity market is light about 20% below the average at this.
[16:00:01 ET] But of course that could change in a big way, particularly on wedday with that p data in the morning and video earnings after the bell and then of course everyone.
[16:00:09 ET] So await kevin war at the end of the week we get the closing bells to start the week and you actually saw a little bit of a big come back into this.
[16:00:17 ET] It is we got closer to those closing bells, particularly when it comes to the dow jones industrial average it had been a good portion of the session.
[16:00:25 ET] RBut we said did see a little bit of a spike into the close now up about 140 points or three tenths of one.
[16:00:33 ET] The S& 500 is lower by 21 points or three tenths of a percent, the nasdaq composite, down about 8 tenths of a percent the nasdaq 100.
[16:00:41 ET] Down 1% and the rusll 2000 closing out the day down about 8 tenth0s of 1% in the s&P 500 peel back.
[16:00:49 ET] LayersYou actually saw significantly more stocks move higher in the S&P today, more than 300 to the upside, fewer than two.
[16:00:57 ET] To the downside kind of speaks Emily to what the actual stocks that were moving in there and the weight of them.
[16:01:05 ET] Tology the big loser here, at least on the day's trade. when you take a look at the S&P 500 IMap function, you can see that red.
[16:01:13 ET] Mostly IT, but also energies and industrial lower, but there were actually more sector levels in the green today leading the way consumer staple.
[16:01:21 ET] Fs and utilities well let's get to some of the stocks that moved higher today, i want to start with an online travel agency.
[16:01:29 ET] Expedia group, best performer in the S&P5 home today, reaching a new intratraday high up 5.4%.
[16:01:37 ET] This after we heard from Evercore ISI's Mark Mahaney, who lifted the price target on the company to a street high of $430.
[16:01:45 ET] 375 he maintains his outperform rating, he said that Expedia has the most attractive valuation on a price to earnings and free cash.
[16:01:53 ET] Relative to Airbnb and booking a couple of its peers, once again, shares of Expedia up more than 5.4.
[16:02:01 ET] Reach a new high in the S&P500 today. Also, I don't know if you have seen the new Spiderman movie.
[16:02:09 ET] Have you seen you have seen it, I what about O odyssey No have you yet to go Romaine, did you see the Odysey, I' not seen odyssey yet I'm waiting for it.
[16:02:17 ET] DVD I'm waiting to watch it on a plane. just how Nolan would want someone to watch it, right on the back of his scene.
[16:02:25 ET] Well, it's still sending shares of IMax and cinema holdings higher today, but it's more about sp.
[16:02:33 ET] over at B Riley Drcrumb said that this weekend's gains were solid, we saw imac shares move higher by 3.9%.
[16:02:41 ET] Close to 5% Spiderman brand new day brought in over the domestic box office close to $130 million.
[16:02:49 ET] 64% year over year, excuse me, that was just the box office, not just that one film. The Odyssey did bring in more0 more than9.
[16:02:57 ET] M over the weekend. I was going to go see it. And then I found out how long it was. And I decided, we're going to go get dinner instead. So we didn't do both of them.
[16:03:05 ET] Finally, watching the Spider Gold ETF, GLD is the ticker.
[16:03:13 ET] Gold continues its run higher, of 8 tenths of 1% today, climbing to the highest in more than three months the U.
[16:03:21 ET] Intervention in the bond market, reviving some concerns about fiscal policy and its impact on the dollar, the Sper gold Trust today hired by.
[16:03:29 ET] Just about 8 tenths of 1% gold hovering around 4680 anunce. Well, there's quite a few decliners that we.
[16:03:37 ET] Look at this afternoon, so I'm looking at shares of NviDdia, Sandisk, microron as you keep an eye on some of those memory chip makers.
[16:03:45 ET] So Nvidia down actually seeing its worst streak since 2022 that' Septemberem down for us.
[16:03:53 ET] straight day when we look at the losing streak, and essentially some of Nvidia's biggest customers were' told prices for certain AI servers are going above.
[16:04:01 ET] 5% so you saw that not only weighing on Sandisk, but also microron and all of this really in the lead up as we keep our eyes on in video.
[16:04:09 ET] Earnings that are due after the closing bell on wednesday, but a big story today was also tariffs, of course, between the us and.
[16:04:17 ET] Canada and we did see a double downgrade on Canadaada goose, that's the name that i'm watching the stock falling about 5 percent on the day for two reasons.
[16:04:25 ET] Primarily, the double downgrade to underweight from overweight at wells fargo and the two things that the analysts are pointing out is one of the tariffs, as i mentioned there essentially.
[16:04:33 ET] the company should be facing more macro risks like the 50% tariffs that the U put on canada, but separate to that warmer weather.
[16:04:41 ET] And El Nino continuing to be in focus when we take a look at this company and others, maybe people aren't actually going to be rushing to get a parka.
[16:04:49 ET] If it's not as cold of a winter as we've seen in the past and lastly looking at hims and hers health, this is a stock that we continue to keep our eye.
[16:04:57 ET] down about 8% at the closing bell, we were talking about this earlier with ourvari own avalon pernell and essentially you were learning that visa.
[16:05:05 ET] Put the company on notice for the fact that it was getting excessive customer complaints, credit card disputes. This is because all these customers were upset.
[16:05:13 ET] About its weight loss subscription starts out at a $39 intro membership and actually jumps to $149 after that and this.
[16:05:21 ET] All not including the drug costs there so you saw that weighing on shares of hs and hers all right let's take a quick look at yields down.
[16:05:29 ET] The curve, the two year basically unchanged on the day, but bigger moves on the longer end of the curve of the 20 and 30 year yield down about4.
[16:05:37 ET] Bais points continuing this little seesaw back and forth as bond traders and options traders more importantly try to get a handle on where they think yields.
[16:05:45 ET] I do want to just bring this to your attention, Timk, you are a father of multiple offsp.
[16:05:53 ET] I don't know if you having rolled them in any of these elite private schools, but good news for you Okay we're actually starting to see more financial aid.
[16:06:01 ET] s despite the fact that a lot of the people sending their kids to these schools in theory would actually just have the cash to pay out themselves.
[16:06:09 ET] We're basically talking about people who maybe make households, I should say, that make as much as $500,000 a year now being offered.
[16:06:17 ET] Basically, you, some way to sort of subsidize that education, and that's large because a lot of these private schools, they're struggling to kind of hit.
[16:06:25 ET] Intro Well, it could be because tuition has gone up so much at these schools, I mean, we're talking for boarding schools, you know, like deerfield, for example,.
[16:06:33 ET] $80,000 a year, even day schools,$50,000 a year, Emily but look, I mean there are plenty of.
[16:06:41 ET] Parents who can afford to pay full freight at these places and you know we'll actually stop at nothing to kind of pay as much as.
[16:06:49 ET] They could for an excellent education, which many people argue these schools offer. Yeah, but I mean, it's an experience too Yes, of course, the experience.
[16:06:57 ET] boarding school at the right age of 15 I mean it is coming what's the experience for the parents who have to pay all this just asking for a friend.
[16:07:05 ET] that needs answers quiet the cost of living is going up though, this is something that I do want to point out our very own Aaron hdson, writing this article.
[16:07:13 ET] And pointing out that investment advisors smart asset now estimates a family afford needs roughly 200 k a year to.
[16:07:21 ET] Comfortably in s antonio or New Orleans in New York, that figure rises to almost $340,0000.
[16:07:29 ET] Right, like a tuition of ADK that's really going to knock out a lot of your budget and you know what's interesting is in the story that Aaronin Hudson wrote.
[16:07:37 ET] Essentially says that the schools are calling these parents middle class, so it just really shows you where we are economically, but separate from that, the fact that many.
[16:07:45 ET] Earned far more than roughly a excuse me $84,000 in terms of the median income, but it's 150,000 to about5.
[16:07:53 ET] that can qualify for that help Don't worry, the cost will continue to go up. My kids are too young now to be thinking.
[16:08:01 ET] But, maybe we can talk about college another day that is going to do it across platform coverage.
[16:08:09 ET] market close did you write those checks yet to the colleges ro, don't start my friend I'm already looking like four or five years down the road when all that disposable income will be.
[16:08:17 ET] what about grad school Oh He's on his own All right We are not on our own tomorrow.
[16:08:25 ET] We are going to join you guys same time, same place for some more of our cross platform coverage is Bloomberg.
[16:08:33 ET] And our coverage continues here on bloomloberg television when we come back a breakdown of that.
[16:08:41 ET] I'm across currents that U. investors are staring down a conversation up ahead with Tors and Slock chief economists over at Apollo Bloberg.
[16:08:49 ET] The.
[16:08:57 ET] The.
[16:09:05 ET] The.
[16:09:13 ET] The.
[16:09:21 ET] The.
[16:09:29 ET] Western countries, all of them are cutting funding to Africa.
[16:09:37 ET] And some of these programs were supported by funding coming from Western countries, like for human resources.
[16:09:45 ET] For testing, for transportation of samples, and suddenly African.
[16:09:53 ET] You just have to think how to fund money and to cover this gap, but it takes some time.
[16:10:01 ET] And I think the community all all of these factors are fueling this mistrust that we see at community level.
[16:10:09 ET] We value the support we got and we are still getting from the US and we think that if we continue to.
[16:10:17 ET] Together and there is no reason for the US network for CDC Africa CDC is the leader in terms of public health.
[16:10:25 ET] Africa a region ri with potential.
[16:10:33 ET] Growth and opportunities, but not without its challenges join us as we get to the heart of African business, politics and economics.
[16:10:41 ET] And ask the question, what's next on this episode, we had thatifying you can see from whole cement, sugar salt.
[16:10:49 ET] During refined product fertilizer, if you look at it, we want to export value premier.
[16:10:57 ET] 28th, only on Bomberg.
[16:11:05 ET] The countdown is on everything you need to get the edge at the end.
[16:11:13 ET] This isWe back to the close I'm Romaine Ba.
[16:11:21 ET] Da in equity markets, most of the major indices finishing the day in the red fractionally so but still the trend line has been much.
[16:11:29 ET] So than what it was just a few weeks ago a big part of the reason are other lines on the screen behind me a big focus right now on rates.
[16:11:37 ET] Focus right now on gold and the dollar, the dollar weakening on the day and so too is the canadian dollar and we'll get to that in a second.
[16:11:45 ET] But that gold, that spot gold number still continuing to creep back up right now at about four spot six5 troy ounce raising a lot.
[16:11:53 ET] Questions here about just how much further this can go and whether this is indeed all tied to those concerns about inflation, the fiscal situation and.
[16:12:01 ET] In now as far as that weakness that we saw in the Canadian dollar today, that came because of the big breakdown that we saw in the U.
[16:12:09 ET] And trade talks, a breakdown that led President Trump to say that he would actually boost tariffs on some Canadian goods, primarily auto.
[16:12:17 ET] By double, 25% to 50% starting at the beginning of the year that actually took a bite out of some of the U automakers.
[16:12:25 ET] Ford and GM mean, that debaement trade and everything around it has continued to actually weigh on the AI sector concerns.
[16:12:33 ET] HereHe into a big report by nvidia, of course, some people also trying to maybe cash out to maybe put that cash to others.
[16:12:41 ET] We'll get to that story in a second and these are having a pretty good day up about 3 percent some of that a beneficiary of some of the moves that we've seen back.
[16:12:49 ET] Fth in the yield space and that does bring us to our top story for the hour the direct intervention by the treasury to control the costs.
[16:12:57 ET] Of the $40 trillion U. debt pile, the historical track record of such interventions are spotty recent.
[16:13:05 ET] First, the Treasuries were purchased in the early 2000 of about $67 billion of primarily longer dated bonds.
[16:13:13 ET] tracted operation that did actually push the 30 year yield down by about two percentage points from 67 to 46 over about a two year.
[16:13:21 ET] And then second there was Operation twist in 2011. that was a duration management scheme where the Fed, not the Treasury, bought $400 billion.
[16:13:29 ET] Of longer term Treasuries while selling an equal amount of short term debt. Now, Bessin's actions so far seemed to be standalone.
[16:13:37 ET] hich is curious, given that two years ago, he blasted his predecessor at the Treasury Janenet yellellen for what he characterized as an attempt.
[16:13:45 ET] To reengineer the world's largest bond market. But it's also curious timing for all of this as Fed chair Kevin Walsh preps for his own.
[16:13:53 ET] Communications moment, a speech friday at jackson hole, wyoming that ostensibly is supposed to be about some of the wonier, more procedural matters out.

U.S. bond yields fell and tech weighed on U.S. stocks on Monday, as investors digested a raft of economic measures and developments coming out of Washington: U.S. Treasury's plans to increase buybacks of long-dated bonds, new 'economic D-Day' sanctions to isolate Iran, and the threat of new tariffs on Canada.

In my column today, I look at whether U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faces a credibility problem. The evidence is mounting — the Treasury's recent surprise FX and bond market interventions have unnerved investors, and by Bessent's own stated goals of reducing ‌the deficit and lowering bond yields, he is falling short.

If you have more time to read, here are a few articles I recommend to help you make sense of what happened in markets today.

Today's Talking Points:

Vigilance against the vigilantes

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent seems to be stepping up the fight against the "bond vigilantes". CNBC reported on Monday that part of his arsenal could be cash at the Treasury General Account to fund the purchase of longer-dated bonds instead of issuing short-term bills. Markets seemed to give the idea the thumbs up, with the 30-year yield falling 5 basis points and the curve flattening.

But is the TGA really a longer-term source of funding for what Bessent last week called a "Treasury Twist"? Apart from emergencies, Treasury wants a chunky TGA balance. Bill issuance is rising, and so too is Treasury's reliance on bills for funding. This increases rollover risk, which necessitates a larger TGA buffer. Leaning more heavily on short-term bill issuance and simultaneously reducing cash on hand to mitigate rollover risk would seem to be a counter-intuitive and dicey proposition.

Tariff tremors

Talking of firepower, U.S. President Donald Trump has loaded up the tariff guns again, and is turning them on an ally, neighbor, and ‌key trading partner Canada. Trump is threatening to impose 50% levies on certain Canadian goods, including all cars, trucks and auto parts. These duties will kick in on January 1 next year if no agreement is reached by then.

Canada is not flinching. Not yet, anyway. Prime Minister Mark Carney has retaliated with "dollar for dollar" tariffs on imports of U.S. steel, electronics and other products, to take effect on September 8. Trump's approval ratings are at an all-time low, and with the midterms looming, perhaps he feels the need to flex some muscle on the international stage. For his part, perhaps Carney senses Trump's domestic vulnerability so is taking up the fight. Either way, relations between the two countries are deteriorating.

Ace in the Jackson Hole

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will deliver the keynote address at the Kansas City Fed's annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday. The eyes of the financial world are on him. Warsh wants to improve the Fed communications strategy, but only three months into his tenure, his communications have raised more questions than answers. How does he plan to get inflation back to target? How committed is he to the 2% inflation goal? Will he resist President Trump's demand for lower interest rates?

His task has arguably been complicated by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who last week said Treasury will temporarily expand buybacks of long-dated bonds. Essentially, Treasury wants to get yields down, juice GDP, and grow the economy out of the debt hole it's in. But this is inflationary, and inflation has already been above target for more than five years. Warsh has said bond yields are a useful signal, and Bessent wants to actively massage them lower. Contradictions that require clearer communication.
