The bond market prepares for a hike to interest rates, while US stocks drift lower
NEW YORK (AP) — The bond market swung as investors built bets that the Federal Reserve may hike interest rates soon to get the nation’s high inflation under control. U.S. stocks, meanwhile, dipped Friday but not by much after economists said a speech by Chairman Kevin Warsh helped strengthen faith that the Fed will do what’s needed to bring inflation down, even if it causes pain for the economy in the short term. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% after flipping between modest gains and losses through the morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped less than 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.5%.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.
NEW YORK (AP) — The bond market shook Friday under a flurry of moves by investors anticipating the Federal Reserve may hike interest rates soon to get the nation’s high inflation under control. U.S. stocks, meanwhile, dipped but not by much after economists said a speech by Chairman Kevin Warsh helped strengthen faith that the Fed will do what’s needed to bring inflation down, even if it causes pain for the economy in the short term.
The S&P 500 fell 0.3% after flipping between modest gains and losses through the morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 30 points, or 0.1%, with an hour of trading remaining, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.6% lower.
The reaction was stronger in the bond market following Warsh’s first speech as chairman of the Fed at an annual economic symposium held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The mountain setting has been the backdrop for major Fed policy announcements in the past, and the pressure was on Warsh.
Worries had grown that his tough talk about getting inflation down to the Fed’s 2% target may be just that, unless the Fed backs it up with action. The Fed could hike short-term interest rates to get inflation under control, but it could also feel deterred from doing so because that would slow the economy and hurt prices for investments. And President Donald Trump, who appointed Warsh, has been vocal about wanting interest rates to be lower rather than higher.
Wall Street has been rising in early trading.
Warsh was adamant again on Friday that he wants to give financial markets fewer clues about what the Fed plans to do with rates for its two jobs of keeping inflation low and the job market strong. He has said he wants markets to react to what incoming data says about the economy and inflation rather than what the Fed says.
But Warsh also said Friday that “short-term interest rates are the predominant tool” for the Fed to do its job. And he said, “I would be hard pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive,” an implication that short-term interest rates may not be high enough to tamp down the economy and inflation.
The yield on the two-year Treasury, which closely tracks expectations for what the Fed will do with its federal funds rate, jumped to 4.35% from 4.22% just before the speech.
The leap came as traders upped their bets that the Fed will hike its federal funds rate as soon as next month. They’re now betting on a nearly 58% probability of that, up from the 35% seen a day earlier, according to data from CME Group.
Longer-term yields also rose following some initial zigzags, but not by as much as shorter-term yields. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.72% from 4.67% late Thursday, and the 30-year Treasury yield got to 5.21% from 5.19%.
All the moves, along with the modest moves for stocks even though higher interest rates tend to hurt them, indicate investors “pricing a more credible Fed,” according to economists at Bank of America led by Aditya Bhave.
“The positive market reaction highlights that investors place a premium on policy clarity, even when that clarity carries” a message implying higher interest rates, according to Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management.
Yields had gotten so high for longer-term bonds this summer, in part because of worries about inflation staying high in the future, that the U.S. Treasury Department made an unusual move last week and said it would buy back more bonds, though analysts said it will likely have only a limited effect.
On Wall Street, Gap jumped 13.5% after the retailer reported stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also said Michael Francis, an industry veteran who began his career on the retail sales floor, will take over as head of its Old Navy stores.
Marvell Technology fell 10.6% even though the chip company reported profit and revenue for the latest quarter that edged past analysts’ expectations. CEO Matt Murphy said its business related to artificial-intelligence technology is strong, and it raised its forecasts for upcoming revenue growth.
But analysts said much of that optimism may have already been baked into Marvell’s stock price, which came into the day with a surge of 184% for the year so far.
After rocketing higher for years because of the frenzy around AI, stocks across the industry are confronting skepticism that they shot too high and that booming demand for AI chips may fade if the AI revolution does not produce as much profit as promised.
In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe following a mixed finish in Asia. South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.8%, and France’s CAC 40 rose 1% for two of the world’s bigger moves.

[15:55:03 ET] I think the long end is being hit by liquidity problems because I think everybody's recognizing that not only are the world's central banks.
[15:55:11 ET] Liquidity, but so are the cash flow generating companies that have been providing liquidity for so long, that's part of it.
[15:55:19 ET] I think that's the problem, think the2 I think it's smarter economically for him to act now get that off the table.
[15:55:27 ET] We're active, we're moving, I don't know that there's the political will to do that and that's I think why we're at 60.
[15:55:35 ET] Not 99 or something like that. Do equity traders care about the credibility of the Fed. I mean, why is it.
[15:55:43 ET] They should, they don't necessarily, I mean, I think Emily that's why we're only down 20 points on the spo as opposed to as opposed to.
[15:55:51 ET] Down more significantly with 12 basis points on the short end, my initial reaction was.
[15:55:59 ET] Gentlemen start your you know, you may feel free to resume your regularly scheduled rally because you know what was the first thing that stock did, so you ready when?
[15:56:07 ET] Left the podium rates were already seven or eight basis points higher at the short end, stocks rallyllied because it's a Friday, it's a quiet day.
[15:56:15 ET] Don't short they'll tape all that kind of stuff. So off we went without asking any regard to it, then finally, the weight of the the weight of money kind of made people.
[15:56:23 ET] Back and think but stock traders, as long as they could justify them with decent earnings and obviously yesterday andvi went a long way.
[15:56:31 ET] thatAnd there was a huge rotation. I can't remember a day where you had a fairly significant decentized rally.
[15:56:39 ET] Yet one sector only up in the S&P 500 that was it10 down one up and 200.
[15:56:47 ET] P 500 stocks lower more than advancers, so it was a weird day and I think we're sort of seeing the hang.
[15:56:55 ET] But it shows you that you a few if the right companies do the right things, the stock market can just sort of carry on.
[15:57:03 ET] Okay, so that's what's going to carry us then until we finally get maybe a little bit more clarity from the Fed just carry on.
[15:57:11 ET] Keep buying NviDdia because some of these chips are selling off I think you know, I'm not a huge seasonalityities person.
[15:57:19 ET] I think that there but I do think it behooves us to think about seember a little bit differently because we've got one of two things happening, either we are going to get our first rate.
[15:57:27 ET] You know least you know now it's better than a coin flip that we might, although I still am' not in that camp, but also you have just,
[15:57:35 ET] The seasonality, we have seen situations where the stocks sort of peter out and you see it today with Nvidia where it it's under a bit of profit.
[15:57:43 ET] To me, what happened yesterday was for the kind of rallies we saw, particularly in the software companies Internet Nvidia.
[15:57:51 ET] flowing in and that institutional money is just sort of washing in, washing out and it's like we can't be momentum traders to that degree.
[15:57:59 ET] Yeah all the time., all right. you got to leave that there's chief strategists over at interactive brokers and video shares down 5% after yesterday's.
[15:58:07 ET] of the major indice in the red on the day, but still higher on the week and for the month of August.
[15:58:15 ET] Today price action starts right now the closing be bloombergs comprehensive.
[15:58:23 ET] Cross platform coverage of the US market close starts right now. and right now, we're two minutes away from.
[15:58:31 ET] of the trading day romaine Basik alongside em grafao taking you through to that closing bell with a global simcast we're joined now by ti snik li.
[15:58:39 ET] today for Carol Maser welcome to our audiences across all of our bloomloberg platforms, television radio, our partnership with YouTube.
[15:58:47 ET] A market that has clearly made it clear what it thought of that big speech by kevin wassh earlier today I mean, I don't want to steal.
[15:58:55 ET] Your thunder romaine, but the bond market reaction, especially at the front end, two year yields up.
[15:59:03 ET] Basis points right now a strain of basically starting at 10 a.. Yeah, you got to throw it out there and you talk about that big.
[15:59:11 ET] ump that you're seeing on the short end of the curve there's no activity really on the long end of the curve the 30 year yield up about two basis points and that's the story of flatten.
[15:59:19 ET] Of the yield and anticipation that the next move by the F will be to hike rates and probably sooner than later and theres.
[15:59:27 ET] Into the equity market when you look at therus 2000, those small caps, those interest rate sensitive stocks are selling off the most today by a pretty.
[15:59:35 ET] Big divergence than the S&P 500 Yeah, the one thing I wanted to point it out, which we haven't actually spoken about so far, but the bloomberg dollar spot.
[15:59:43 ET] That's up by about three tenths of a percent right now, so we're watching the dollar closely too after all this news we've had today and particularly we have so much talk about that.
[15:59:51 ET] Bsement trade coming out ofasreasury secretary besson and the move that he started telegraphing about two weeks ago.
[15:59:59 ET] That bid into gold that dropped in the dollar being reverse for today of course a lot of questions right now.
[16:00:07 ET] A lot of people sort of I guess maybe depart for the next week or so until after the Labor day holiday and sort of what that means remember if you have your.
[16:00:15 ET] You want to mark September 16 that is the next fed decision day October 28 is the next one after that election day.
[16:00:23 ET] November 3rd here in the US and then the final F meeting on december 9th of this year we have read across the screen here in the US for you.
[16:00:31 ET] E the are relatively the dow Jones industrial average only down 10 points we'll just basically call it unchanged.
[16:00:39 ET] Down 20 or a quarter of a percent the nasdaq down 139 points or a half a percent the nasdaq.
[16:00:47 ET] Down7 tenth of a percent and the Russell 2000 taking the biggest brunt of today's sell off down about 1.4%'re not leaving.
[16:00:55 ET] Next week are you oh really you're gone who allowed that I don't know, it's been great working here.
[16:01:03 ET] All right, well we'll see who shows up on Monday as far as the S&P 500 looks today, we did see 230 stocks move higher.
[16:01:11 ET] And if you take a look at the it's a different story than yesterday yesterday remember there was only one sector in the.
[16:01:19 ET] And it was tech, more of a mixed bag today, though what's leading the way consumer discretionary communication services, energy, staples.
[16:01:27 ET] And what is the laggard, it's IT, some days you're up, some days you are down, it's all after that F meeting.
[16:01:35 ET] All right, well let's get to some of the stocks that moved higher today, gainers, how about that, Look at this, we got gap higher today.
[16:01:43 ET] Close to 13% shares jumped after the company named Michael Francis to head up its old Navy brand, profit too came out.
[16:01:51 ET] Outpaced estimates that offset a sales decline at old Navyvy and lower sales guidance Franciscis will take over a CEO of old Navyvy on November 6th.
[16:01:59 ET] And the current CEO will transition to an advisory role. It does follow a sales decline last quarter at Old Navy and the company trim the upper range of its outlooks.
[16:02:07 ET] For 2026, net sales still investors cheering the overall results from gap higher today by 13%.
[16:02:15 ET] Shares of a firm the buy now pay later Fintech company, they were higher today by as much as 17% earlier in the session.
[16:02:23 ET] A steady move lower, still finishing the day in the green up 4 tenths of 1%. The company did hit an intra day high going back to September.
[16:02:31 ET] 2025 so the highest intraday since then, close to a year, this after the company forecast revenue for the first quarter that beat the average analyst estimate.
[16:02:39 ET] Did' speak with Max Levchin, the company's CEO, and he said that American consumers, at least the consumers that he views, he calls them the affirm.
[16:02:47 ET] He says they are healthy right now. And finally, taking a look at some of those sports betting companies.
[16:02:55 ET] Draft kings and flutter shares were higher today shares of draftings up by 4.3% we did see them move higher.
[16:03:03 ET] Midday after New York, after kali faced a setback in a US appeals court, remember kalhy the prediction market, you can do a lot of.
[16:03:11 ET] What you do when it comes to sports betting on Calhi, but it's not considered sports betting, at least by.
[16:03:19 ET] En the cTC that' different excuse me'sing it's predicting, at least that's what the cTc says.
[16:03:27 ET] This is something that is not going away anytime soon, and Kali faces this challenge on a state by state basis.
[16:03:35 ET] Yeah but this is the latest setback for the company, Fltter shares higher today by 7.1 percent these sports.
[16:03:43 ET] Books have been pretty beat up though, as people have moved away from traditional sports books and gone instead to rivals like Polymarket and Kalhy.
[16:03:51 ET] All right, I want to get to the Decrs since we get on the upside, we want to start with PayPal, they're share down about 12% and here's the reason why.
[16:03:59 ET] Vces are saying there's a group from Advdvent strippe, they're not going along with their $50 billion pursuit of the company, so that was a big blow.
[16:04:07 ET] Good news for the company it would have actually ranked as one of the biggest ever leveraged buyouts if it had gone through.
[16:04:15 ET] How early mover and digital payments, right, but the thing is a struggling, modernization and its payment technologies have been a real problem for the company.
[16:04:23 ET] RsYou have Apple, you have alphabet, they've kind of seized the market share, and then you have the company, they ousted their CEO earlier this year.
[16:04:31 ET] I have a new CEO in the spot, and he's saying specific financial goals for the company, he wants to change how it reports earnings also.
[16:04:39 ET] They assign each line of business specific revenue target, but the company shares, yeah down about 12% another downer and this was on the.
[16:04:47 ET] Yes, we're talking about Nvidia, their shares also are down lower, what a difference a day makes the leader.
[16:04:55 ET] AI chips coming off a huge rally this is when it projected sales growth of about 70% for the next fiscal year.
[16:05:03 ET] Yesterday, it added about $442 billion in market value. So we've been talking about different.
[16:05:11 ET] Exts on our show they're saying why the dip that's a question we posed then they said you know what, it's not systemic, maybe it could be interest rate related but.
[16:05:19 ET] Not an issue right now and lastly alta shares there are taken head of as well they're down about 4% higher discounts premium promotions they really weighed on.
[16:05:27 ET] On their margins, so that was the issue for alta All right, and we go back to the treasury market we were just talking about a little bit earlier, obviously the flattening of the curve, the story up.
[16:05:35 ET] Da 12 basis point drop excuse me increase on the two year yield as a lot of traders now price in slightly greater.
[16:05:43 ET] s that the F will start hiking rates this year, your 30 year yield, not going anywhere, and that's a testament maybe to the idea.
[16:05:51 ET] That the F will try to get inflation under control He yes, Tim how much do you.
[16:05:59 ET] Do you think the average U. resident eats per year how much I don't know, 100 pounds yes.
[16:06:07 ET] 103 pounds wow look at thatow he did his homework at gun, there's off position on the, but here's the important part, increase.
[16:06:15 ET] From five years ago, a six increase from five years ago, red meat consumptionistic mining, this is according to the Department of agriculturegriculture, we're talking about this.
[16:06:23 ET] Because Lisa getting this story on my radar today, it's in the Financial Time, it's about the cult of the $5 road history chicken that is defined.
[16:06:31 ET] Inflation and it's at Costco How was that defined inflation, I mean, I know 5499 for rotisserri chickens. No, no, no, that's not my point.
[16:06:39 ET] How are they selling it at $5 and not like going out of business, they do it all themselves, they have their own slaughterhouse in nebraska.
[16:06:47 ET] You met like in the back of the store or something maybe there's a store there, but yeah, it's you know, bring it to all in house Yeah have you ever been up to one?
[16:06:55 ET] Places and you know Washington Heights, you know that where you can get the live chicken and they do the deed for you right there and not on purpose, okay?
[16:07:03 ET] Yeah yeah, not on purpose what you got for us the pro Bowl, I know you're a big sports ball fan, Timm seovk but the pro Bowl has's been an institution.
[16:07:11 ET] Since 1951 in the NFL and earlier this week they said they're getting rid of it, nobody watches it, honestly, and the players don't care.
[16:07:19 ET] So don't really it's basically like you know the equivalent of like a backyard touch football game, but they finally decide end of an era, I don't know if inflation had.
[16:07:27 ET] do that they Emily are you a sports fan, you know, I'm trying trying.
[16:07:35 ET] That what does that mean the significant other forces you to watch it as well yeah yeah I follow the cheerleaders and so the pro Bowl was always a fun.
[16:07:43 ET] Time to see all of the different cheerleaders all coming together in her college football Emily, you follow college football I do follow my college sports a lot so I do need to.
[16:07:51 ET] I need to grow up right, well, you got the weekend to do it guys, have a great weekend Maybe we'll see Romaine here on Monday we.
[16:07:59 ET] Emily, I'm going to join Carol out in the seventh century wherever she is go ahead that is going to do it for our cross platform coverage of the closing be.
[16:08:07 ET] Have a good and safe weekend everybody, we will see you same time, same place on monday.

[16:09:03 ET] In case you missed it on the opening tray, we have too much demand.
[16:09:11 ET] That we can imposibly cope. We have, for example, only four data centers, connection requests only as Eon.
[16:09:19 ET] 80 gigaw,80 gigawats is the total demand of Germany in peak times. It's outright impossible that we will be able.
[16:09:27 ET] To connect such a number, we need to change the ruless here so that we can actually satisfy the needs of the customers that really have a need.
[16:09:35 ET] And I' not just speculating on a grid connection. You say you don't have the rules at the moment to determine that. Do you have a sense of what that number looks like, or I would.
[16:09:43 ET] This maybe 60 gigat out of that 80 gigat,20 gigat would mean that we add 25% to.
[16:09:51 ET] system, which is still very significant. and that's only data center we have to double the infrastructure on the electricity side in the next years.
[16:09:59 ET] Even if most of the connection requests are specd, miss the opening trade live every weekday.
[16:10:07 ET] CFOs are reshaping the c suite bloomberg chief future officer shines a spotlight on these dynamic leaders.
[16:10:15 ET] Disrupted the beauty category with a strategy built on value, inclusivity and fun CFO.
[16:10:23 ET] The company gearing up for its next phase of growth what we've built over the last seven years is not going to be the same things that get us over the next.
[16:10:31 ET] Wat Chief Future Officer Wednesdaydnesday on Bberg.
[16:10:39 ET] The countdown is on everything.
[16:10:47 ET] of the this is the close the.
[16:10:55 ET] Rema secure with a look at how equity is finished out the day, modest losses all around for most of the major in here in the us though.
[16:11:03 ET] So the major indice in the u. still finishing the week in the green and all the major indice right now on track to post a monthly gain for the month of.
[16:11:11 ET] But the real activity was in the bond market with the short end of the curve seeing most of the action big selling there that push yields higher.
[16:11:19 ET] 12 basis points, less activity on the longer end with the 30 year yield that yield was only up about two basis points.
[16:11:27 ET] largelygely a function of what we learned out of Kevin mor and his commitment to actually fight inflation, it's a pivot and it was really more I guess the articulation if you will.
[16:11:35 ET] They really did put a bid under some of the financial stocks like Bank of America, it put a bid under a lot of discretionary stocks as well, remember, they would actually benefit.
[16:11:43 ET] Should inflation start to come down, however, of course that fight against inflation could slow the economy and that raises questions about some of those longer duration.
[16:11:51 ET] Nams like Nvidia as well as the material names like Alcoa. And that does bring us to our top story for the hour.
[16:11:59 ET] And it's not so much what's next for the Fed, but really what's next for the economy, the key takeaway from Wsh was that explicit acknowledge.
[16:12:07 ET] Of the inflation problem and explicit language that getting the core inflation growth rate back down to the fed's 2 percent target isn't.
[16:12:15 ET] 's a commitment by the FOmc to follow through on its dual mandate.
[16:12:23 ET] , nobody can miss the responsibility for 65 months of sustained elevated inflation.
[16:12:31 ET] Sit squarely with the central bank, and that's where it belongs. So here is my standard.
[16:12:39 ET] That underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed.
[16:12:47 ET] W we have work to do, that's our job, that's our mandate, and that's our charge to keep.
[16:12:55 ET] Of course, inflation is just one side of the mandate, maximum employment, that's the other, and now markets are looking for clues for that balance.
[16:13:03 ET] rates to fight inflation sometimes will it slows economic activity which often means a slowdown in job growth, if not full on contraction and hiring.
[16:13:11 ET] Now warsh didn't say job losses would be harmless or even specify how much unemployment he would tolerate and that is the asymmetric policy problem here.
[16:13:19 ET] silver lining, of course, is that that employment objective is much closer to being satisfied than the price stability mandate and maybe.
[16:13:27 ET] That labor market strength is what gives the fed enough headroom to prioritize around inflation and a 2 percent target that has.
[16:13:35 ET] ive now for more than five years in counting dana petson joins us right now chief economist and leader of the economy strategy and finance center at the conference.
[16:13:43 ET] who is out there in jackson hole, wyoming and dana i do want to get your reaction to not only just what wsh said.
[16:13:51 ET] The way that he said it, what do you think is going to be the primary focus of this F over the next few meetings?
[16:13:59 ET] Price stability, he's been saying that repeatedly and he was very strong on that today, and so I think the F is.
[16:14:07 ET] Going to continue to keep rates a little bit restrictive, especially since we have these structural drivers of inflation better leading.
[16:14:15 ET] Again the easing that we're seeing from shelter costs but it gets to this idea as to sort of when you would.
[16:14:23 ET] There are a lot of people that are looking at the next meeting less than three weeks away and saying the fed should just hike rates.
[16:14:31 ET] Any sense, though, that war she is actually prepared to act rather than just talk?
[16:14:39 ET] I think definitely he is prepared to act if needed, he did note that we still have some inflation.
[16:14:47 ET] Readetings coming out and there's also the uncertainty, certainly given geopolitical risks out there and think that.
[16:14:55 ET] The decision is not made yet or at least he's not going he's certainly not going to telegraph it and i just think that the F.

[16:08:15 ET] I here on Bloomberg television and we go back out to Jackson Ho for reaction to Kevin Moore's speech and sit down with the INF managing director Chris.
[16:08:23 ET] that's coming up next here on Bloomberg.
[16:08:31 ET] The.
[16:08:39 ET] The.
[16:08:47 ET] The.
[16:08:55 ET] The.
